The Mustard Seed's Move Brings New Opportunity For Vendors And Customers

Published

The Mustard Seed has been a staple in the Oxford community since it’s grand opening 14 years ago. Since then, the original owner has sold the store to Kimberly Bumgardner, who has taken the shop to new heights and a new location.
The Mustard Seed moved from its location on University Ave. to its new home on Jackson Ave. December 2016.
With questions surrounding the future of the shopping center on University, Bumgardner wanted to make a move that would benefit the business and their customers. Replacing Furniture World, the new store has over 17,000 square feet of retail space, along with 8,000 more square feet of warehouse space.
“We wanted to own our own space and not have to worry about any of that. We got out because we found a place that we really wanted to go,” Bumgardner said. “Jackson Avenue is obviously booming. It’s crazy how much it has changed in the last five years. We’ve seen tremendous foot traffic, I’m actually surprised how much more traffic we’ve gotten since we got here.”
Seventy-nine unique vendors make up the Mustard Seed, and individuals are able to create their own setup in booths around the store. With the new location, the store was able to add 40 new booths.
“If it weren’t for our vendors, we wouldn’t have the Mustard Seed. They’re the ones that keep us going,” Bumgardner said. “They can decorate it, paint it, do whatever they want. It’s like their own mini-store. It’s a one-stop shop, it’s a shopping experience of everyone. You can come in and get stuff for the Grove, a birthday gift, baby gifts, or you can stock your house here.”
A sign sits at the register warning customers of the dangers of waiting too long to buy an item. At a place like the Mustard Seed, there may only be one of each item; so if you miss out on it, you may not get another chance.

“We’re so different. We’re not like Wal-Mart where you’ll come in and find 15 of the same thing. If you see something and you want it, get it because it’ll be gone tomorrow,” Bumgardner said.
