Rebel Softball Set For Two Weekend Scrimmages
With its 2017 season countdown now in the single-digit range, Ole Miss softball is gearing up for its first trip out West to California with two open scrimmages this weekend.
The Rebels will participate in an intrasquad game Friday at 3 p.m., with batting practice set for 2:15 p.m. Saturday’s scrimmage will begin at noon with batting practice scheduled for 11 a.m. Fans are encouraged to attend to catch a glimpse of the 2017 Rebels before they embark on a 15-game tournament swing in California, Texas and Florida.
Both scrimmages will take place at the Ole Miss Softball Complex, where Ole Miss will host 27 home games this season, including two tournaments (Red & Blue Classic, Ole Miss Classic). Following 15-straight on the road, the Rebels host Louisiana Tech in the home opener, March 1, to kick-off a string of 14-in-a-row in Oxford.
The season opens next weekend, Feb. 10-12, at the Easton Invitational hosted by Cal State Fullerton.

Ole Miss Men’s Tennis Senior Ricardo Jorge SEC Player of the Week
After a strong performance this past weekend at the ITA Kick-Off, Ole Miss men’s tennis senior Ricardo Jorge has been named the SEC Player of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.
Jorge (Tavira, Portugal) went 3-0 at the ITA Kickoff in doubles and singles as the Rebels went 1-1, including a 4-3 win at No. 15 Texas A&M. It marked the team’s first win against the Aggies since 2014 and the first win against a top 15 team since 2015.
Against A&M, Jorge teamed with Zvonimir Babic at No. 3 doubles to clinch the point with a 6-4 win, which proved to be the difference in the outcome. He tied the match, after A&M had taken a 2-1 lead, with a straight win at No. 3 singles.
In a tight 4-3 loss to No. 23 SMU on Saturday, Jorge won 6-4 in the third at No. 3 singles to tie the match and keep the Rebels’ chances alive.
Jorge improved to 6-4 overall and 3-0 in dual matches. He also moved to 5-1 in doubles with Babic, 2-0 at No. 3.
The Rebels are back in action Feb. 11 at No. 7 North Carolina.
