Oxford-Lafayette Humane Society Nears Completion of New "Catio"
The Oxford-Lafayette Humane Society has broken ground on their newest addition.
A “catio” is currently under construction, and it will provide an outdoor area for the 58 current cat residents of the humane society. The cement has been laid, and the roof is in place, but bad weather has hindered construction recently. Once the bad weather stays away, the project should be completed very soon.
Director Jenn Petermann spoke about the idea for the “catio” and how it will give the cats a place to be cats. The area will be outfitted with plants, perches, and scratching posts to provide the cats a way to get out of the room they reside in and play.
“We have the outside areas for the dogs, where dogs can go out and just be dogs, and we were looking for something similar for the cats,” Petermann said. “All animals usually like to get outside at some point, but cats are a little trickier. We had to come up with something where they can be contained, but make it a place where cats can be cats.”
The cats are currently let out of their cages, but confined to the room, but Petermann is excited to see them have this outdoor element.
“They can play, and we have cat trees, but we really thought that adding the outdoor element would be really nice for them,” Petermann said.
Petermann noted that donations from Oxford residents during the holiday season made this project possible, but they are still looking for donations to cover some of the finishing costs.
