After the hectic and fun weekends in Oxford, Monday nights on the Square can seem like a ghost town. The sidewalks are quiet, parking is plentiful, and many locations are closed. However, there is one local restaurant and bar that always draws a crowd due to their special event: Monday Night Trivia at The Blind Pig.
Monday Night Trivia at the Blind Pig has been a weekly tradition for almost five years. Jennifer Nelson, trivia hostess, came up with the idea because the other trivia nights in town were too late for working professionals. Nelson and a friend approached the owners of the Blind Pig, and after discussion, were granted permission to have a trial run on a Monday night.
“The other trivia nights in town were just so late,” Nelson said. “My friend and I knew the owner of The Blind Pig; so we begged him to please, please, please let us have a trivia night here. That was in March of 2012, and over the years, it’s just gotten bigger and bigger.”
Monday Night Trivia at The Blind Pig begins at 8:30 p.m. and ends at approximately 10:15 p.m. There are six regular rounds of five questions each, a lightning round of 15 questions, a final question with 10 responses, and two breaks. During each break, Nelson updates the team standings but warns the teams at the top not to get comfortable because the standings can, and will most likely, change after each round.
Trivia Schedule
-1st Round: Wild Card – Topic changes weekly
-2nd Round: Fact or Crap
-3rd Round: Current Events
-Break
-Lightning Round: Fastest teams to the front receives bonus points
-4th Round: Sports
-5th Round: Audio
-6th Round: General Knowledge
-Break
-Final Question: A list of 10 (Examples: 10 James Bond Movies, 10 Professors at Hogwarts, etc.)
-Winners announced and money given out
Each team is limited to eight players or less, and each person must pay $5 to play. At the end of the night, the money is divided between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. Sometimes first place wins as little as $80 and other times they can win upwards of $200. The amount depends on how many people have signed up to play that night.
Teams can also choose any name they desire. Nelson does not censor the team names and players take full advantage of this. Sometimes, teams keep the same name each week while others choose funny or politically comical names.
As expected during the semester, The Blind Pig is packed to the walls with trivia players, but, due to many locals being regular players, the event also draws a crowd during “off” times.
Monday Night Trivia at The Blind Pig has a loyal following, and Nelson does not disappoint. Each week the questions are new and relevant, sometimes difficult but always fun. Trivia is canceled only for certain holidays and once in the past 18 months due to severe weather.
