Mississippi Coats 4 Kidz Expands to Serve 12 Counties Across Mississippi, Seeks Volunteer Help
After serving six communities in 2016, Mississippi Coats 4 Kidz will double and expand into six new counties across the state for the 2017-18 winter. The counties served by the organization will be: Quitman, Panola, Coahoma, Tate, Tunica, Lafayette, Tippah, Grenada, Tallahatchie, Yalobusha, Calhoun and Leflore. Donations are taken year round, and creator of the foundation, Linda Keys, is looking for help to spread the word in her mission to put a coat on every child in Mississippi.
“We are asking for volunteers in all of these counties, asking schools to contact us and work with us in these counties, asking businesses, churches and other organizations to work with us. You can help by donating…volunteering..partner with us,” Keys said. “The need is great, and we are trying to help children and families with low incomes. We get calls all the time from teachers asking can we help a child in their school. We work with anyone who wants to help us help the children in Mississippi.”
Keys’ mission to provide coats across the state began when she came across five students waiting on a school bus in the winter of 2015. None of the children had a coat on, and when Keys asked where their coats were, one boy responded and said they didn’t own a coat. Keys knew she had to do something and bought the children a coat and gave it to them the next day when they were at the bus stop in the cold. Reflecting on the difference she made in these children’s lives with one act of kindness brought upon a vision Keys felt needed to be done.
“God has you where you are for a reason. In my spirit, I knew I had to do something for them, and after I did, I realized these are not the only children in Mississippi standing at a bus stop without a coat,” Keys said.
