Vassallo: Ole Miss Coeds Should Receive A Special Recognition this Valentine's
Have you ever stopped to think what makes all those wonderful fall Saturdays in the Grove so special. It’s not only the weather, the day’s football opponent or running into old friends, but the beautiful, well-dressed young ladies of the Ole Miss family.
I was doing some research recently on the famous entertainer Bob Hope when I came across the 1948 film he starred in entitled “The Paleface.” Co-starring Jane Russell, this movie highlighted one of the greatest songs of the year, “Buttons and Bows,” which remains popular even today.
Some of the lyrics from this hit tune (songwriters were Jay Livingston and Ray Evans) have always reminded me of the beautifully dressed Ole Miss coeds which the University has become famous for!
Here are a few of my favorite lines….
“East is east and west is west
And the wrong one I have chose
Let’s go where I’ll keep on wearin’
Those frills and flowers and buttons and bows
Rings and things and buttons and bows
Don’t bury me in this prairie
Take me where the cement grows
Let’s move down to some big town
Where they love a gal by the cut o’ her clothes
And I’ll stand out
In buttons and bows.”
With all the great dress shops we have in Oxford, we may not be quite the “big town” referenced in the megahit, but we do have the large selections that keep our young ladies from having to travel out of town for the latest fashions.
With Valentine’s Day only a month out, let’s everyone tell our wives, daughters or girlfriends how much we appreciate them by purchasing a gift certificate from one of Oxford’s many great shops so that they can continue the tradition highlighted in “Buttons & Bows.” Here’s yet more of those great lyrics….
“My bones denounce the buckboard bounce
And the cactus hurts my toes
Let’s vamoose where gals keep usin’
Those silks and satins and linen that shows
And I’m all yours in buttons and bows.”
