Possible Snow May Cause Closing of Oxford Schools on Friday
The weather in Northeast Mississippi continues to change from week to week, and this week has been no different.
A 40 percent chance of snow is listed for tomorrow with a low of 18 degrees and a high of just 27. Students have just returned to school in the Oxford district, but if wintery mix makes its way to Oxford, students may have a three-day weekend ahead of them. Superintendent Brian Harvey will have the final call of whether or not school will be canceled tomorrow across the district.
“We’ve been watching the forecast, and one time you look, it says 50 percent; then the next time it says 10 percent. So, we’ll keep watching closely, and we’ll be out there at 5 a.m. checking on the condition of the roads before we make our decision,” Harvey said.
While Harvey noted that they do not expect the “light, powdery mix” to stick to roads or be a real issue at all, he didn’t rule out the possibility of school being canceled tomorrow or ending early. If the wintery weather is expected to hit later in the day, they will mobilize buses and get students home safely before the threat of icy roads.
If the district is closed, parents will receive an automated call informing them of the decision, but if there is no call then school is on as scheduled. The district’s website can also be monitored for updates on the closing of schools.
