Freshman forward Shelby Gibson (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) picked up her first career SEC Freshman of the Week honor after averaging 14.0 points per game and 6.0 rebounds per game in Ole Miss wins over Mississippi Valley State and Arkansas.
Gibson becomes the first Ole Miss player to earn SEC accolades this season and the first since teammate Shequila Joseph (London, England) was named SEC Player of the Week last season after a win over then – No. 9 Kentucky last January.
In the victory over Mississippi Valley State, Gibson had a career night. She tallied a career-best 16 points to go along with a career-best seven rebounds and three steals. Gibson was 6-of-8 from the floor against the Lady Devillettes, shooting a blistering .750 percent. The Murfreesboro, Tennessee native followed up her career night with an impressive SEC debut against Arkansas. Gibson scored 12 points and added five rebounds in the Rebels’ SEC-opening win, becoming the first Ole Miss player to record double figures in their SEC debut since Joseph scored 21 in her SEC debut against Missouri in 2013. For the week, Gibson was 11-of-17 from the floor on .647 percent shooting
The 6-3 Gibson has had an excellent start to her freshman season. She is averaging 8.4 points per game and is Ole Miss’ top scoring freshman and has reached double figures in six games this season including each of Ole Miss’ last two outings. To open the season, she became the first Ole Miss freshman since current Coordinator of Player Engagement Armintie Herrington to open a season with back-to-back games in double figures when she posted 14 points against Southeastern Louisiana and 10 points against Lipscomb.
The Rebels will hit the road for a tour of the state of Alabama for their next two games beginning on Thursday when they head to Tuscaloosa to take on the Crimson Tide. Tip-off is set for 7 pm CT from UA’s Coleman Coliseum. The game will be available on the WatchESPN app.
