Earlier today, Robyn Tannehill announced that she will be running for mayor of Oxford. Current Mayor Pat Patterson indicated he will not seek re-election in June 2017, and Tannehill is the first to throw her hat into the ring for the upcoming election cycle. Tannehill has served Oxford as the Ward 2 member of the Board of Alderman for the last 4 years. You can read Tannehill’s statement in full below:

“Today I announce my candidacy for Mayor of Oxford with the desire to serve as a leader and advocate for this wonderful city. The candidacy comes after much prayer and consultation with my family, community leaders and friends, and I know without a doubt the time is right.

Oxford is the fastest growing community in the State of Mississippi. This is an excellent problem to have, but as a result, Oxford’s leaders face difficult decisions regarding infrastructure, taxes, and maintaining a satisfactory level of city services as our community moves forward.

We need a mayor with vision for oxford’s future who has experience working in these areas, and can creatively solve problems, and work as a consensus builder with county, university, and state officials. I have spent many years serving this community, the past four as an alderman, and believe that I have demonstrated my ability to serve effectively and fairly.

I do not see myself as a politician, but as a community advocate.

Over the last 28 years I have have been blessed to experience Oxford from several different perspectives: student, newlywed, university of Mississippi employee, city of Oxford employee, a small business owner, a volunteer, and a parent with children in the oxford public school district.

Four years ago, I believed that entering public service was a natural progression for my work in our wonderful community. I feel the same way about running for mayor. God has blessed our community so richly, and I want to serve as mayor of Oxford to continue the dedicated work of Mayor Pat Lamar, mayor Richard Howorth and Mayor Pat Patterson, as well as the existing board of aldermen and our city employees.

I also want to thank Pat Patterson for the leadership and service he has given Oxford over the years as a businessman, member of the Tourism Council, Alderman and Mayor. Under Mayor Patterson’s leadership, the City of Oxford has thrived and is well positioned for future success.”
