Mayor Pat Patterson Announces He Will Not Run for Re-Election
Mayor George “Pat” Patterson announced last week to city department heads that he will not run for re-election in June 2017.
Patterson has served the City of Oxford for 16 years as an elected official. He served two terms on the Board of Alderman and is now completing his second term as mayor.
“I think eight years on the Board of Alderman and eight years as mayor is enough,” Patterson said. “It’s time to let someone else step in.”
Patterson is a sixth generation, lifelong resident of Oxford, Oxford High School graduate and University of Mississippi graduate. He has grown his involvement with the city throughout his life.
“I was on the Tourism Council, Chamber of Commerce and coached little league,” Patterson said. “It’s what happens when you grow up in a small town, you just become involved.”
Patterson’s second term as mayor will come to a close in six months. However, he was clear that he will not be retiring. Patterson will focus on his other local interests such as his business, University Sporting Goods, on the Oxford Square.
“If another opportunity to serve comes up, I might be interested again,” Patterson said. “I’m not going to retire… just a change in jobs you might say.”
As for the future of Oxford, Patterson has faith in the citizens and those who are set to carry the torch after him.
“There’s a whole flight of young people who can step in now,” Patterson said. “I wish them the best, and I know the people will make the right choice.”
Those interested in running in the June mayoral race will submit papers to the City Clerk’s office in January showing proof of residency, proof of voter registration and will pay a party affiliation fee.
