With the holidays on the horizon and Thanksgiving around the corner, the Oxford Police Department would like to remind the public that driving after even a few drinks is not only illegal, but extremely dangerous. Buzzed driving is still considered drunk driving, and you will be arrested for it. Because of the increase in traffic accidents and fatalities around the holiday season as a result of alcohol, OPD will have an increased presence in Oxford to keep drunk drivers off the road, and the streets safe.

“It’s crucial people understand what constitutes drunk driving,” said Joey East, Chief of Police. “Even if you’ve only had one or two drinks, so many factors determine your blood alcohol content. If you’re going to drink, always use a designated driver. There are too many other options available, so there is no excuse for drinking and driving.”

Police will be increasing the number of patrols, setting up roadblocks, and using local media to reach out to all drivers. The consequences of just one instance of drunk driving can affect you for years. With a DUI conviction, you can face jail time, fines, loss of your driver’s license, towing fees, and other DUI expenses, totaling $10,000 on average. While a DUI is expensive, a life is priceless. Don’t ruin yours, or someone else’s, by drinking and driving.

Follow these tips to ensure a safe holiday season:

  • Even one drink can impair your judgment and increase the risk of getting arrested for driving drunk—or worse, the risk of having a crash.
  • If you will be drinking, do not plan on driving. Plan ahead; designate a sober driver before the party begins.
  • If you have been drinking, do not drive. Call a taxi, phone a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation.

Remember, buzzed driving is still drunk driving. Don’t make that mistake.

Extremely necessary article around the holiday season, but please do not continue to perpetuate the false claim that on average $10,000 is spent on a DUI arrest. If you choose to print the stat, then please attach source proof material.
