Ole Miss football: Rebels need serious culture change on defense

Coach Hugh Freeze leads his team on the field as the Rebels prepare to take the field Saturday taking on the Georgia Bulldogs Saturday at Vaught-Hemmingway stadium.
Hugh Freeze didn’t burn Shea Patterson’s redshirt for … whatever that was.
With bowl eligibility still up in the air, Ole Miss came crashing back to reality in Nashville on Saturday, losing 38-17 to Vanderbilt only a week after upsetting No. 8 Texas A&M. And the Rebels’ biggest problems in this game — defense and maintaining possession — were a microcosm of what’s ailed them all year long.
The Commodores entered this game with the nation’s seventh-worst offense by way of yardage. What did they do? Pick up 481 total yards, their most against any SEC foe this year, while Kyle Shurmur recorded a season-high 16 yards per completion. Vandy reeled off at least one play of 20-plus yards on all five of its touchdown drives. Three were Shurmur passes.
Coordinator Dave Wommack’s defense put the Ole “Miss” in “missed tackles.” Ralph Webb repeatedly ran unhindered into the heart of his unit. Piling onto this mess was the loss of standout pass rusher DeMarquis Gates, who was ejected for targeting and will miss the first half of the Egg Bowl.
None of this is new to Ole Miss fans, who’ve been forced to watch these issues recur on a weekly basis.

The 2016 Ole Miss football season is almost over. It has been a disappointment. However, you can still be a fan and be disappointed in the season at the same time.
Let’s be honest, this season has been difficult to watch. Many fans are disappointed. Watching the Vanderbilt game was an exercise in self-inflicted sadness. The high hopes that the Rebel faithful had entering the game were dashed by the end of the third quarter.
None of the fans question the blood, sweat and tears the players go through in order to get on the field. Those who have never played the game at that level can not fully understand what it takes to get ready every week.

Ole Miss senior Evan Engram snags the reception and beats the tackle from Alabama’s Ronnie Harrison at Vaught-Hemmingway stadium Saturday during the Ole Miss v Alabama game.
As of Monday, there are 29 accepted invitees to the Senior Bowl. In the coming weeks, the top 110 seniors and fourth-year junior graduates in the nation will form the rosters for the North and South squads. They will begin practices on Jan. 23 and play the 68th annual Reese’s Senior Bowl game on Jan. 28, 2017 at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala.
ESPN2 and NFL Network will broadcast live from the practices and NFL Network will carry the game beginning at 1:30 p.m. CT.
Engram is the nation’s leading tight end with 84.2 receiving yards per game, which tops all Southeastern Conference players of any position. He ranks second nationally among tight ends with 5.9 catches per game and eight touchdowns. The Powder Springs, Georgia, native holds Ole Miss records for most catches, yards and touchdowns in a season and a career by a tight end. He is the nation’s active leader among tight ends with 2,320 career receiving yards.
In 2016, Engram has racked up 65 catches for 926 yards and eight TDs. Another strong outing or two could make him the third player in school history to go over 1,000 receiving yards in a season, joining wide receivers Laquon Treadwell (1,153 in 2015) and Shay Hodge (1,135 in 2009). Engram has four games with 100 or more yards and has scored a touchdown in eight of 11 outings this year.
Ole Miss has a long history of players in the Senior Bowl, dating back to 1950. Engram will be the 97th Rebel to accept an invitation to the Senior Bowl. The most recent participants were Senquez Golson and Cody Prewitt in the 2015 game.
