Mississippi Highway Patrol’s “Line to Line” Program Aims to Keep Motorists Safe This Thanksgiving

With the day before Thanksgiving being one of the nation’s busiest travel days, The Mississippi Highway Patrol will be launching their “Line to Line” initiative in an effort to keep motorists safe this upcoming holiday.

The “Line to Line” initiative will place every Public Affairs Officer patrolling I-55 North and Southbound from the Tennessee state line to the Louisiana state line on Wednesday, November 23 from 10 a.m to 7 p.m. The initiative was designed as a high-visibility program to ensure the safety of everyone on the roads. The increased officer presence will aim to crack down on reckless and distracted driving. Officers will also be looking for seatbelt usage and the proper use of child restraints.

According to Captain Johnny Poulos of the Public Affairs Division, the program is not a way to hide and catch drivers; it is used to keep drivers safe during a period of heavy traffic.

“I think that everyone on the roads wants to know that we are out there doing our jobs and that’s what this initiative is all about,” Poulos said. “It’s all hands on deck, and this type high-visibility will help us and help motorists looking to travel to their holiday destinations safely.”

The ‘Line to Line’ program will serve in addition to the official MHP 2016 Thanksgiving Travel Enforcement Period which begins on Wednesday, November 23 at 6 p.m. and will conclude Sunday, November 27 at midnight. This will cause an increase in state troopers across the state of Mississippi. MHP investigated 221 crashes including four fatalities during the 2015 Thanksgiving enforcement period, and with programs like “Line to Line,” they hope to see these numbers go down.
