16th Annual University of Mississippi Museum Keepsake Ornament Has Arrived
The 16th annual University of Mississippi’s Museum Keepsake Ornament has arrived. The ornament depicts the iconic throwback Powder-blue helmets worn by the Ole Miss Football team in front of the Walk Of Champions.
A process that began in the spring, Melanie Munns, the designer of the ornaments, began floating ideas to the museum staff about what would be featured on the ornament. When the powder blue helmet was decided on, Munns worked closely with the athletic department to ensure that the colors were as authentic as possible. Accompanying the ornament is a history of the powder blue helmet that Munns wanted to make sure was correct.
“The athletic department was so helpful, providing photos and official colors,” Munns said. “They also checked to make sure all my research was correct because I knew that the die-hard fans would know the difference if the color wasn’t perfect or the information was incorrect.”
While Munns may not be the biggest football fan, she recognized that the powder blue helmet is an important symbol to the university and all of its fans, as well as just the fact that she liked the way it looks.
“I love the tie in with Chucky Mullins and how it represents the golden age of Ole Miss football in many ways. And I don’t really know football, but just aesthetically I got really excited about the color of the helmet itself,” Munns said. “This ornament serves as a way to celebrate the university’s past as well as reminding people that we at the museum are a part of the university and showing our school spirit.”
The Keepsake Ornaments traditionally depict a historic building or symbol in the city of Oxford or from Ole Miss, as well as pieces from the gallery in the museum. Years past have seen designs of Rowan Oak, Ventress Hall, Double Decker, The Courthouse on the Square and much more. This year’s keepsake featuring the powder blue helmet can be found at the University Museum’s shop for $25. Past years ornaments can also be purchased at the store. The profits from the ornaments will be used to continue efforts to expand the museum and bring new and exciting exhibits. The ornaments make a great gift, so stop by and get yours today!
