The Mississippi Research Consortium is sponsoring a workshop on “Advanced Materials for Transformative Changes to the Defense, Aerospace and Civil Environments” that will be hosted by the School of Engineering at The University of Mississippi on November 16-17, 2016 at the Inn at Ole Miss.
The goal of the workshop is to bring forward the advances in materials science research in the various sectors (defense, aerospace and civil) and to bridge the gaps between them.
Advanced materials research has created a revolution in the technology and economic growth in the US, as well as in the world in the age of globalization. The speed of innovation is hastened with the maturing of nanotechnology that can produce high performance nano-materials in large quantity and at low cost. Many of these materials find their way to the military, aerospace, and other “high-tech” industries much faster than the civil infrastructure system, for example, which accounts for a huge part of the nation’s economy.

The purpose of the workshop is to bring forward recent advances in materials science and mechanics in the various sectors (defense, aerospace and civil), and to bridge the gaps among them, in order to create enabling technologies for various applications that have national impact. It is aimed at identifying the current technology maturation barrier created by the high cost of man-made materials. The goal is to build a bridge from the science-based discovery at its highest level to implementation in a number of engineering discipline areas.

The director of the Advanced Materials for Transformative Changes to the Defense, Aerospace and Civil Environments workshop is Dr. Ahmed Al-Ostaz, Brevard Family Chair Professor of Civil Engineering and lead researcher at the University of Mississippi.
Dr. Al-Ostaz, lead researcher at the Ole Miss NIRG in the School of Engineering, is engaged with world scientists in research and development of the wonder material Graphene, finding important uses for defense, aerospace and civil environments. During the past three years, they have established a niche prominence on the national nanotechnology science scene.
The 2-day workshop is invitation only and there will also be an Ole Miss School of Engineering Reception on Wednesday, November 16th on the porch and in the board rooms of Memory House and Carriage House at the Inn at Ole Miss.
The reception will host researchers and leaders from Ole Miss, Mississippi State University, Jackson State University, University of Southern Mississippi, NASA, the US Army Engineer and Research Center, the Army Research Laboratory, the Army Aviation and Missile Research, Development and Engineering Center, Argon National Laboratory, Oak Ridge national Laboratory, local and national industries and more.
