Join Artist Milly West Tonight For Cuba Night On The Oxford Square

Oxford has a rich and diverse art scene, and local artist Milly West’s Cuba Night, to be held tonight at The McDavid Law Firm, is a “different kind of art event and fundraiser” for the Oxford community. 

Partnering with the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council (YAC), West is looking to share her passion for a type of art that may be new to many people while raising money for a good cause.

“As all my friends know, I have spent the last 20 years falling in love with Cuban art and artists,” West said. “I have collected wonderful art on every trip to Cuba, and three years ago I dedicated all profits from my photo book, “CUBA FOR KEEPS,” to artists in Santiago de Cuba who were victims of Hurricane Sandy. Many of those affected are still suffering and rebuilding. Now, I want to share my enthusiasm and my artwork.” 

With a donation of $150 per ticket or $200 for a couple, no one will leave empty handed as the donation includes taking home a unique piece of Cuban art. With over 80 pieces, the gallery features paintings, photography and more. Ten names will be drawn from a bowl around 7 p.m., and those ten people will have the opportunity to take home pieces valued up to $750. A $75 donation can also be made for entry into the event without taking home a piece of art. 

“At around 7 p.m., the selection of art will begin with ten names being drawn from the bowl at a time. Those people will have five minutes to place their name on their selection, which secures that piece as theirs to take home,” West said. “An individual or couple paying at [the $150] level may also use their entry fee toward a larger or more valuable work of art. Some paintings and photos are valued at up to $750 but will be sold for much less on this night only.”

Cuban inspired foods and drinks will be provided, including mojitos and Cuba Libres. Live Cuban music from The Keybones will be played throughout the night. Cuba Night will run from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the McDavid Law Firm on the Square. Tickets can be purchased at the Powerhouse until 5 p.m. today or at the door.
