Starting this Friday, local artist Martha Ferris will be displaying her new gallery “Paintings and Drawings: Black and White In Color” at the Oxford Treehouse Gallery.

Ferris was born and raised in Mississippi and has since traveled the world. Her latest gallery will feature new works that reflect her upbringing and her experiences in her travels. Ferris is looking forward to sharing her view of the world with the public at a place like the Oxford Treehouse Gallery.

“I’m thrilled to be showing my work at the beautiful Treehouse Gallery, which is truly a work of art itself hand built by Walter Neill,” Ferris said. “He and Vivian Neill, a fine painter herself, have created a magical spot where they make and nurture art and provide an amazing venue for other artists to show their work. I feel very lucky to have connected with them this year and am excited to be exhibiting in Oxford among old dear friends.”

Being raised on a farm along the Big Black River in Mississippi, Ferris developed a passion for depicting the vivid colors, the variety of plants and the abundant amounts of wildlife. While still harboring a love for her roots in Mississippi, Ferris has begun to use her same love of vivid colors to create works of art that bring the sights of cities around the world to life. Ferris has employed experimental techniques to combine precise geometric formalism with warm colors to “create a surprising synthesis of discipline and joy.”

Ferris has received notoriety for her work, including being the recipient of the 2016 Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters Award in Visual Arts for her 2015 exhibit, “Foreign and Familiar Places” at Fischer Galleries. Her work has been featured in museums, schools and parks all across the country, including a 500-square-foot splash pool project in the Mississippi Museum of Art’s public garden. The project is made up of lights, water and brightly colored mosaics to create a work of art that doubles as a play space for children.

“Paintings and Drawings: Black and White In Color” debuts this Friday and extends through November 30. The gallery is free to the public with valet parking available. Friday’s debut will feature a reception from 5 p.m. until  8 p.m. with the opportunity to meet Martha Ferris and discuss her work.
