Evan Engram shunned the NFL and is dominating the NCAA

Evan Engram
Evan Engram could have been in the NFL by now. Ole Miss’ smooth tight end had already shown NFL eyes what he could do in his first three years in Oxford.
What he has done in the first five games of his senior season is eye-popping. Engram leads the SEC in receiving with 479 yards. He is third with 30 catches, and if it was a stat, he would likely be first in absurd catches.
Engram is producing those types of numbers on a team loaded with wide receiver talent.
“I really think, we all know and we have seen him, but I think it is the play of those other guys. Damore’ea Stringfellow, Quincy Adeboyejo, DaMarkus Lodge,” Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze said following Saturday’s win over Memphis. “What are you going to do? The only way you can bracket him is if you put a linebacker and safety inside out on him, but that means someone is one-on-one.”

A pair of Ole Miss soccer freshmen led the way offensively, as the Rebels won their second-straight match, 2-1, at Alabama Thursday night.
The victory for the Rebels (8-6, 3-3 SEC) marks their third in the last four games, earning another three key points towards the SEC standings. The win also marked the sixth-straight for Ole Miss over Alabama, as the Rebel senior class will finish their careers having never lost to the Crimson Tide.
In Thursday’s match, Alley Houghton scored for the second-straight game, while fellow freshman Maddi Falter netted the game-winner. Sophomore CeCe Kizer was credited with the assist on both scores, giving her nine points in her last four contests.
It was Houghton – who scored the game-winner at Kentucky last weekend – who got the offense rolling Thursday, as she found the net in the 23rd minute. Kizer dished her the assist at the 23:26 mark, when she punched it in from roughly five yards out to give the Rebels a 1-0 lead.
After heading into the halftime break 1-0, Alabama came back to tie it up in the 60th when Maddy Anzelc scored the equalizer off a header that snuck through.
But, 10 minutes later, it was Falter who scored the game-winner from the far post when Kizer provided the beautiful assist in for the score. The goal marked the first of her young career, as the Rebels’ last three scores have all come from freshmen (Houghton 2, Falter 1).
The Rebels finished with seven shots on the night with three on goal, led by two overall from Houghton and Addie Forbus. The Crimson Tide finished the match with 16 shots and six on goal. Ole Miss goalkeeper Marnie Merritt had a solid night in goal with five saves, her third-straight with at least five stops.
Ole Miss returns to the pitch Sunday at home against No. 16 Florida at 5 p.m. on SEC Network.

Ole Miss women’s tennis junior Arianne Hartono began play in the All-American Championships main draw singles Friday, dropping her match to qualifier Lily Miyazaki of Oklahoma, 6-4, 6-0.
Hartono, ranked No. 17 in the nation, led the first set 4-3, before losing three straight games. Miyazaki, ranked No. 77, carried that momentum over to the second set winning 6-0 to complete the upset.
“There are a lot of tough players in this tournament and even though we didn’t get the result we wanted, we definitely learned a lot and can improve for the next match,” associate head coach Jason Ontog said.
In consolation play, Hartono will face Paige Hourigan of Georgia Tech Friday at 2:30 p.m. CT. If she wins that match, she would play again later in the evening. Hartono has an opportunity to pick up some big wins in the back draw, as four of the top eight seeds all lost on the opening day.
June Stewart Invitational
While Hartono is in California, several members of the team are in Nashville, Tennessee for the June Stewart Invitational featuring players from Vanderbilt, Auburn, Kentucky and Middle Tennessee State.
Senior Zalina Khairudinova, sophomores Allie Sanford and Brooke Stevens, and freshmen Cameron Kriscunas and Anna Vrbenska will be competing in Nashville for the Rebels.
Vrbenska went undefeated in singles on the opening weekend of play at the Wolfpack Invitational.
Play begins Friday at 12 p.m. and then 9:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
