Four Rebels Named To PFF SEC Team Of The Week

Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly decides to throw instead of handing off to Akeem Judd as the Rebels take on the Georgia Bulldogs Saturday at Vaught-Hemmingway stadium.

Four Ole Miss Rebels were named to the Pro Football Focus SEC Team of the Week for their performances in Saturday’s 48-28 win over Memphis.

Leading the way was junior defensive end Marquis Haynes with a grade of 86.7. Haynes was followed by senior tight end Evan Engram’s score of 83.3, sophomore offensive tackle Sean Rawlings’ mark of 82.1 and quarterback Chad Kelly’s 79.9

Haynes also earned a spot on the Pro Football Focus national team of the week.

Kelly comes in at No. 8 this week in the PFF top 10 college quarterback rankings. PFF said of Kelly, “Kelly put up a monster grade in the Rebels’ win over Memphis, completing 30 off 43 aimed passes for 361 yards, one touchdown and an interception. He has been knocked throughout his college career for some spotty decision-making with the football, but he makes up for that with some big-time throws. He leads the nation in deep adjusted completion rate at 56 percent, which is made even more impressive by the fact that 20 percent of his throws are of the 20-plus-yard variety.”

Ole Miss Football: Ranking the Remaining Games

Ole Miss Football is 3-2 heading into the bye week. We are ranking the remaining games in terms of difficulty from easiest to toughest.

The Rebels are about where we expected this season. They are 3-2 going into the bye week. It is important for Ole Miss to rest up as there is a tough stretch coming up after the bye.

Way-Too-Early Ole Miss Bowl Projections

The Ole Miss cheerleaders celebrate another score as the Rebels take on the Georgia Bulldogs Saturday at Vaught-Hemmingway stadium.

Ole Miss is ranked 14th in the nation in both major college football Top 25 polls this week after defeating previously unbeaten Memphis, 48-28, Saturday.

The Rebels (3-2, 1-1 SEC) are off this week before playing at No. 16 Arkansas on Oct. 15 and at LSU on Oct. 22 before finally returning home to close out the month on Oct. 29.

It’s way too early to start guessing the postseason, but that’s never stopped anyone. Here are the latest bowl projections for Ole Miss.

BASEBALL #ProRebs Update: #MLBRebs Ready for Postseason

Ole Miss Baseball has a history of student-athletes playing professionally following their careers as Rebels. Throughout the summer, OleMissSports.com updated Rebel fans about the current #ProRebs making their mark on professional baseball diamonds across the country.

For the majority of the 29 #ProRebs, the 2016 season has come to an end. However, three of the seven #MLBRebs, (Aaron Barrett of the Washington Nationals, Chris Coghlan of the Chicago Cubs and Drew Pomeranz of the Boston Red Sox) will see their seasons continue to postseason play with eyes on a World Series title.

Despite being sidelined for the entire 2016 season due to injury, Barrett will still provide support off the field as the Nationals begin postseason play Friday at home versus the Los Angeles Dodgers. A member of the team with the best record in Major League Baseball during the regular season, Coghlan’s postseason with the Chicago Cubs will start Friday night at Wrigley Field against the winner for the San Francisco-New York Mets National League Wild Card game. In the American League, Pomeranz and the Boston Red Sox travel to Cleveland Thursday for a divisional series against the Indians.

Major League Baseball Rebels

#30 Aaron Barrett | RHP | Washington Nationals
A reliever for the Washington Nationals, Barrett did not pitch in a game this season after undergoing Tommy John surgery last September. Recovering from his surgery, the Rebel fractured his right elbow during a simulated game in July to end any possibility of returning to the Nationals for the postseason. However, Barrett and the Nationals expect the reliever to be back better than ever for the 2017 campaign.

#8 Chris Coghlan | UTIL | Chicago Cubs
Between the Oakland Athletics and Chicago Cubs, Coghlan played in 99 games this season. He spent the past two seasons with the Cubs before the team traded him to the Oakland in February. After 51 games with the A’s, Coghlan returned to the “Windy City” as the Cubs made a trade to get their prized utility player back. During the regular season, he hit .252 in 48 games for the Cubs. Having played four different positions throughout 2016, Coghlan will look to play an important utility role in the postseason. After being named National League Rookie of the Year in 2009, Coghlan has remained in the Majors for eight seasons.

#2 Zack Cozart | SS | Cincinnati Reds
After his 2015 season was cut short due to injury, Cozart had a bounce-back year in 2016. Playing in 121 games this season, the Rebel hit .252 with 117 hits, 67 runs and 50 RBI. His 16 homers were a career high, breaking his previous personal best of 15 set back in 2012. During the season, Cozart was named the 2016 Heart and Hustle Award winner, an honor given to a Major Leaguer who exemplifies a leader and a true team player. He has been the Reds’ starting shortstop for the past five seasons.

#31 Lance Lynn | RHP | St. Louis Cardinals
Lynn was another Rebel that sat out the 2016 Major League Baseball season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in November 2015. As a focal point in the St. Louis Cardinals’ rotation for the past four seasons, the right-hander started more games than any other pitcher on the team since 2012 entering this season. Lynn is also the franchise leader in postseason appearances.

#59 Mike Mayers | RHP | St. Louis Cardinals
After seeing his dream come true when he was called up to the St. Louis Cardinals for a spot start (July 24), becoming the 44th Rebel in history to play Major League Baseball, Mayers finished the season with the big league club. He was one of the team’s September call-ups and made three appearances throughout the final month of the season. Starting the season 5-2 with a 2.30 ERA in nine starts for the Springfield Cardinals, where he became a Texas League All-Star, Mayers was promoted to Triple-A (May 31). For the Memphis Redbirds, Mayers made 16 starts and compiled a 3.73 ERA with 84 strikeouts.

#31 Drew Pomeranz | LHP | Boston Red Sox
Pomeranz’s season will continue after the Red Sox captured the AL East division crown. After logging 170.2 innings this season, nearly double his previous high for a season, the Rebel will likely appear out of the bullpen during the Red Sox’s postseason run. Overall, the southpaw made 30 starts with a 3.32 ERA during the regular season, which includes making 17 starts for the San Diego Padres. Tallying 115 strikeouts and a 2.47 ERA with the Padres, Pomeranz earned a spot in the 2016 MLB All-Star Game, becoming the first All-Star Rebel since Lance Lynn in 2012. He is in his sixth season playing Major League Baseball.

#7 Seth Smith | OF | Seattle Mariners
Smith played in 137 games for the Seattle Mariners, posting a career-high 63 RBI and adding 16 home runs, one off his personal best for a season. The Rebel finished his eighth full season in the Majors, nearly helping the Mariners to a postseason berth. He hit .313 during a 13-game stretch in September, as Seattle finished three games out in the wild card race.

Minor League Baseball Rebels

#16 Will Allen | 1B | West Michigan Whitecaps (Class A) – Detroit Tigers
In 119 games with the West Michigan Whitecaps, Allen recorded 130 hits, 73 RBI and 44 runs to go along with a .266 batting average. He led the team in doubles and RBI, while ranking second with five home runs. Allen’s 35 doubles ranked third in the Midwest League, while his 73 RBI was sixth among the league’s hitters. This season, the Ole Miss All-American catcher made the transition from behind the plate to first base.

#14 Austin Anderson| 3B | Delmarva Shorebirds (Class A) – Baltimore Orioles
Another 2014 All-American for Ole Miss, Anderson finished his first full season of professional baseball. In 53 games with the Delmarva Shorebirds, the third baseman had 47 hits and 21 RBI. Anderson was riding a nine-game hitting streak, posting a .382 average during that stretch before a right quad injury landed him on the disabled list (August 6) for the remainder of the season.

#11 Auston Bousfield | CF | El Paso Chihuahuas (Triple-A) – San Diego Padres

After spending the first half of the season with the Double-A San Antonio Missions, Bousfield was promoted to the Triple-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres (June 30) and helped the El Paso Chihuahuas win the Pacific Coast League title. He played in 38 games for the club as he inched closer to the Majors.

#19 Matt Crouse | LHP | Toledo Mud Hens (Triple-A) – Detroit Tigers
Crouse ended his season in Triple-A. In 20 appearances with the Toledo Mud Hens, including 13 starts, he has posted a 6-5 record with a 3.66 ERA over 93.1 innings. Starting out the year with the Double-A Erie SeaWolves, the lefty was called up to the Mud Hens (May 26), Triple-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers.

#60 Chris Ellis | RHP | Gwinnett Braves (Triple-A) – Atlanta Braves
After being traded in the offseason by the Los Angeles Angels, Ellis spent the 2016 season in the Atlanta Braves farm system. He made 15 starts for the Gwinnett Braves, striking out 65 hitters in 67.2 innings. Ellis started the 2016 campaign with the Double-A Mississippi Braves and immediately made a major impact for the team. In 13 starts in Mississippi, Ellis went 8-2 with a 2.75 ERA over 78.0 innings, which earned him the starting nod in the 2016 Southern League All-Star Game.

#32 David Goforth| RHP | Colorado Springs Sky Sox (Triple-A) – Milwaukee Brewers
Goforth spent 2016 jumping up and down between the Milwaukee Brewers and Colorado Springs Sky Sox. The Rebel pitcher was called up by the Brewers three times, making 10 appearances for the Major League Baseball team. He finished the season in Colorado Springs, where he posted a 3-4 record in 42 appearances spanning 51.1 innings.

#40 Henri Lartigue | C | Williamsport Crosscutters (Class A Short Season) – Philadelphia Phillies
After getting drafted in the seventh round of the 2016 MLB Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies, Lartigue began his career by playing in 41 games for the Williamsport Crosscutters. As one of the newest Pro Rebs, Lartigue recorded 32 hits, 15 RBI and 12 runs in 33 games. He also added seven doubles, one triple and one home run.

#15 Braxton Lee | CF | Montgomery Biscuits (Double-A) – Tampa Bay Rays
Lee played in 110 games for the Montgomery Biscuits this season, helping the team win 76 games, the third-most in franchise history. He tallied 81 hits, 35 runs, 25 RBI, 12 doubles and 13 stolen bases.

#22 Alex Presley | LF | Toledo Mud Hens (Triple-A) – Detroit Tigers
Presley spent the 2016 season with five teams, including a pair of MLB clubs. The Rebel began his season in the Milwaukee Brewers organization, playing 47 games in the Majors before being released. Presley wasn’t without a team long as he signed with the Detroit Tigers. Following an impressive stint in the Minors and hitting .296 for the Toledo Mud Hens, Presley earned his way back to the Majors August 18 when the Detroit Tigers purchased his contract from their Triple-A affiliate. He finished the season with 50 hits in 41 games for the Mud Hens.

#9 Errol Robinson | SS | Ogden Raptors (Rookie) – Los Angeles Dodgers
The fan favorite and starting shortstop at Ole Miss over the past three seasons, Robinson was drafted in the sixth round of the 2016 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers and decided to take his play to the professional level. In 55 games for the Ogden Raptors, Robinson racked up 62 hits to go along with 40 runs and 26 RBI. He showed off his speed as well with 18 stolen bases in 20 attempts. Robinson finished his first professional season cracking the top 10 of the Pioneer League in doubles (17) and steals (18).

#17 Wyatt Short| LHP | Eugene Emeralds (Class A Short Season) – Chicago Cubs
Just like he did as the Ole Miss closer, Short shut down the opposition in the professional ranks. In 15 appearances with the Eugene Emeralds, the southpaw did not allow an earned run in 15.0 innings of work. He tallied seven saves and one win along the way, holding opponents to a .104 average at the dish. Only three hits were recorded off Short, and he added 14 strikeouts to help the Emeralds win the Northwest League championship. Short was drafted by the Cubs in the 13th round of the 2016 MLB Draft.

#34 Chad Smith| RHP | Batavia Muckdogs (Class A Short Season) – Miami Marlins
Smith pitched 24.0 innings and tallied 20 strikeouts over 15 relief outings for the Class A Batavia Muckdogs. Chosen in the MLB Draft for the second straight year, this time in the 13th round by the Marlins, Smith started out with the organization’s rookie team before moving up to the Muckdogs.

#29 Matt Snyder | 1B | Trenton Thunder (Double-A) – New York Yankees
Snyder was bothered by injuries for the second straight season. He played in five games with the Trenton Thunder this year, going 4-for-19 with two RBI and one run before going on the disabled list June 11. Snyder also appeared in three games with the Tampa Yankees, hitting at a .500 clip.

#22 Matt Tracy | LHP | Jacksonville Suns (Double-A) – Miami Marlins

Tracy played for three teams in 2016, finishing the season as a member of the Jacksonville Suns, Double-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins. In 12 appearances for the Suns, including 11 starts, he logged 54.2 innings. Despite going 3-1 as a member of the Trenton Thunder, Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, Tracy was released and needed to find a new home to continue his professional career. It didn’t take long as he was signed by the Marlins. The Rebel southpaw made his debut for the organization June 28, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings of relief to earn a victory for the Jupiter Hammerheads before getting promoted to Jacksonville.

#18 Christian Trent | LHP | Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Class A) – Milwaukee Brewers
Trent ended his season with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers after being called up from the rookie team August 24. He pitched in three games for Wisconsin, tallying 6.1 innings of work. Before earning the promotion, Trent made seven appearances for the Milwaukee Brewers’ rookie team in the Arizona League, boasting a 1.65 ERA with 18 strikeouts in 16.1 innings.

#30 Stuart Turner | C | Chattanooga Lookouts (Double-A) – Minnesota Twins
Turner wrapped up his second season as the starting catcher for the Chattanooga Lookouts. For the Minnesota Twins Double-A affiliate, he recorded 77 hits, 40 runs, 41 RBI, 22 doubles and six home runs at the plate. Meanwhile, he threw out 19 baserunners behind the dish.

#15 Jacob Waguespack | RHP | Lakewood BlueClaws (Class A) – Philadelphia Phillies
Waguespack put together a strong 2016 season, going 4-2 with six saves and a 3.52 ERA in 43 appearances for the Lakewood BlueClaws. The tall right hander punched out 72 hitters through 71.2 innings out of the bullpen, leading all relievers in those categories. He also surrendered just one home run throughout the season.

#19 Bobby Wahl | RHP | Nashville Sounds (Triple-A) – Oakland Athletics
Wahl dominated on the mound throughout 2016, earning a call-up to Triple-A for the last month of the season. For the Nashville Sounds, the Rebel had a 2.79 ERA and four saves in nine appearances. Prior to his promotion, the 2013 All-American posted a 2.21 ERA and 48 strikeouts over 40.2 innings in 33 appearances for the Midland RockHounds.

#18 Scott Weathersby | RHP | Lancaster JetHawks (Class A Advanced) – Houston Astros
For the Lancaster JetHawks, Weathersby recorded 78 strikeouts and held a 6-6 record in 28 outings, spanning 94.1 innings. He began the season as a starter before moving to the bullpen, a place he was used to during his Ole Miss playing days. Weathersby was called up to Double-A for a spot appearance in July, tossing a pair of scoreless innings.

#19 J.B. Woodman | OF | Lansing Lugnuts (Class A) – Toronto Blue Jays
Woodman had a big year. After earning All-America accolades at Ole Miss in the spring, the Rebel was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the second round of the MLB Draft. In 54 contests with the Vancouver Canadians, Woodman tallied 53 hits, 18 doubles, 28 runs and 24 RBI to go along with a .272 average. His play earned him a promotion to the Lansing Lugnuts for the remainder of the season. In nine games for the Lugnuts, Woodman hit an astounding .441 to cap off his first season as a Pro Reb.

#10 Austin Wright | LHP | Mobile BayBears (Double-A) – Arizona Diamondbacks
Wright made 27 relief appearances for the Mobile BayBears, posting 39 strikeouts in 43.2 innings and holding opposing hitters to a .235 average at the plate. Following a year of independent league baseball in 2015, Wright signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks for the 2016 campaign. He immediately made his mark with the Class A Visalia Rawhide, going 2-0 with a 0.46 ERA in 16 relief outings to earn the promotion to Double-A.

#16 Alex Yarbrough | 2B | Arkansas Travelers (Double-A) – Los Angeles Angels
Yarbrough played in 131 games for the Arkansas Travelers, Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels. The Rebel tallied 126 hits for a .267 batting average to go along with 52 RBI and 48 runs. Yarbrough also showed some pop at the plate to the tune of 32 doubles, three triples and four home runs.
