SEC Power Rankings: The Showdown Is Here
This Saturday nos. 1 and 2 collide in Oxford which ultimately could decide the outcome of the west and possibly the SEC. Both teams had relatively easy warmup games as Bama defeated Western KY by 28 while Ole Miss won over Wofford by 25. Three other SEC confrontations this weekend have Georgia at Missouri; Texas A&M at Auburn and Mississippi State at LSU.
Here’s how the rankings line up after week two:
Of the six nonconference matchups this weekend, Vanderbilt has the biggest challenge playing on the road at Georgia Tech. East Carolina is at SC; TX State at AR; North TX at FL; Ohio at TN; and New Mexico State at KY.
Returning to the Alabama-Ole Miss clash, the number one question circulating is if the Rebels can prevail three straight years against the Tide. Very few teams have ever performed the “hat trick” against Bama. For Ole Miss to win, four things have to happen:
1. No turnovers or (but if there is one) Bama cannot cash in with points.
2. A defense that makes passing difficult with both a pass rush and close coverage.
3. Consistent scoring by quarter, similar to last year’s formula to victory.
4. And last but not least, LUCK! We need a break or two just as in the last outing to come away with a win.
Regardless of what happens in this contest, the Georgia-Ole Miss game next week is setting up to be the signature, defining game for the 2016 season. It’s never easy in the west. Where are Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Missouri and SC when we need them? (Kentucky replaces Georgia on the 2017 schedule.)
