Ole Miss Men and Women Sweep Rebel Invite
The Ole Miss cross country teams swept the inaugural Rebel Invite on a picture perfect Friday night at FNC Park with wins in the women’s 5K and men’s 6K.
After a strong showing in Memphis last week, the women’s team was able to improve on their third-place finish by finishing first as a team, and 1-2-3 individually in the 5K.
Coach Ryan Vanhoy was very pleased with how the teams competed.
“With the women, we wanted to start kind of conservatively as a team and progress as the race went along,” Vanhoy said.
The women were able to come out on top in the team standings, finish 1-2-3 in the race and have all runners finish in the top 23 of the 45-person race.
Junior transfer Hannah Christen led the pack to the finish line.
“I was really excited that we were able to run as a team tonight and be able to work together,” Christen said, “It was really cool to be able to finish first in the inaugural Rebel Invite and to have the team finish as well as we did.”
The women ran for an average of 17:26, with 13 runners finishing under 18 minutes.
The No. 22 Rebel men improved on their third-place finish last week by coming in first in the 6K, as well as turning in the top-nine finishes. All Rebels finished in the top 20, with four Rebels running the race unattached from the team for various reasons.
“We had the same plan for the men, start conservatively and progress over the back half of the race,” Vanhoy said. “We wanted to have seven or eight guys finish together and they were able to execute that very well.”
Freshman Parker Scott finished the race first individually, while running unattached. Junior Mark Robertson was the first official Ole Miss finisher, coming in second.
The men ran a team average of 18:23, with 14 runners under 19 minutes, unattached runners included.
The Rebels will be back in action September 30 when they travel to South Bend, Indiana, for the Notre Dame Invitational.
