Oxford Artist Theora Hamblett’s House On Van Buren Avenue
Theora Hamblett, an Oxford artist, was one of the first Mississippi folk artists to achieve national prominence.
Hamblett went to Lafayette County High School, and after high school became a teacher. She left the teaching profession in 1931 to take care of her mother.
Many of her paintings are reminders of the early life that she spent on the farm or depictions of bible verses. Her fame really took off once she was recognized by a New York Art Museum in 1954.
Hamblett left many of her paintings to the University of Mississippi where they are featured in the university’s art museum.
