True freshman Jack Defoor will have to wait another year to get on the field for the Rebels as Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze announced Tuesday that the offensive lineman would be redshirted.

Defoor recently underwent shoulder surgery, which ultimately led to the decision to sit the freshman for the season.

Mississippi State Football Roundtable Predictions: Ole Miss

Screen Shot 2016-08-23 at 12.49.49 PM

How does the Maroon and White Nation team think MSU football will fare in 2016?

The college football season is quickly approaching. The level of hope around the Mississippi State football program isn’t exactly at an all time high. The departure of several key players and, most importantly, the uncertainty at quarterback has MSU fans unsure how to feel entering 2016. Don’t worry Bulldog fans, the staff at M&WN is here to help. We are going to break down every game and tell you whether or not we believe MSU will win and why.

The Battle for the Golden Egg. It’s a great example of what makes college football the greatest sport on Earth. Every week from September through November, teams’ and fans’ demeanor for the week hinge on what happens on Saturday. In the state of Mississippi, the week of Thanksgiving is like no other. Most people spend time with family and great food. Some enjoy their first chance to deer hunt for the season. But come Saturday all eye are focused on one thing: The Egg Bowl. Winning this game means bragging rights for a whole year for your fan base. Winning this game can make a mediocre season feel like a good one or a good season feel great. So how will the 2016 version of The Egg Bowl play out?

2016 Preseason AP Poll

Screen Shot 2016-08-23 at 12.51.23 PMThe Associated Press’ preseason top 25 was unveiled Sunday morning.

Alabama topped the poll at No. 1, while LSU also checked in the top five at No. 5. Tennessee will start the season ranked in the top 10 at No. 9.

Ole Miss (No. 11), Georgia (No. 18) and Florida (No. 25) all ranked in the top 25.

AP Poll methodology per the official website:

The AP Top 25 is determined by a simple points system based on how each voter ranks college football’s best teams. A team receives 25 points for each first-place vote, 24 for second place and so on through to the 25th team, which receives one point. The rankings are set by listing the teams’ point totals from highest to lowest. The mathematical formula is the same as the one used for the AP Pro 32 rankings and the AP Top 25 rankings for men’s and women’s basketball.

SI predicts Ole Miss will stumble out of the Gate

Screen Shot 2016-08-23 at 12.48.52 PM

Sports Illustrated may have just provided Hugh Freeze and Ole Miss with some bulletin board material.

SI recently came out with a piece mentioning four programs that could get off to slow starts in 2016. The Rebels were included within the article — as were Stanford, Wisconsin, and Texas.

Ole Miss’ schedule isn’t for the faint of heart. The team opens up in a massive non-conference neutral site tilt against Florida State — followed up with games (all at home) against Wofford, Alabama, Georgia and Memphis. Then, back-to-back road games exists against Arkansas and LSU.

The Rebels return only 10 starters from a season ago, and are tasked with replacing the likes of Laremy Tunsil, Laquon Treadwell, Trae Elston, C.J. Johnson, Cody Core, and Robert Nkemdiche.

Hugh Freeze Creates his own Funeral Scene to Motivate Players

Screen Shot 2016-08-23 at 12.49.23 PMThis has to be one of the most bizarre motivational tactics that a football coach has ever used on players.

Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze created his own funeral scene and showed it to the team. The reason for the act could be paraphrased, but it’s probably easier if you read the explanation from Freeze himself.

Here is the full transcript of Freeze’s quote:

“I created a funeral scene for me and showed it to all our players. The whole purpose is understanding whatever you believe drives your behaviors, and your behaviors drive your performance, and your performance will give you some result. We need to work backward. You need to say this is the result I really want. Now, are my beliefs and are my behaviors going to get me that result. …

“I wrote on our screen during our commitment service ‘This is the result I want at my funeral. That is what I want my wife to say about me. This is what I want my kids to say about me. This is what I want my players to say about me. This is what I want my parents to say about me.’ The rest is insignificant. I have time to make sure my beliefs are creating my behavior and are going to get me the results. And it is the same way with the team. What result do we want? Now, let’s go back and are your beliefs and behaviors going to get you there.”
