Five Observations of Ole Miss Rebels’ Football Practice So Far

With the opener game against Florida State Seminoles in Orlando on September 5, Ole Miss Rebels are gearing up at the fall practice camp. Here are five observations so far…

1. Chad Kelly is good, and he needs to be Ole Miss’ quarterback this year, but Shea Patterson is all that he’s billed to be. Patterson has a quick release, and can make defenses look silly. The freshman also has good enough speed to make people worry about his threat of running the football.

2. Gary Wunderlich could provide Ole Miss a weapon this season. Wunderlich has been making field goals consistently outside of 50 yards the first few weeks of camp. Wunderlich was the number one kicker in the country in the 2014 class and has been consistent for the Rebels since he took over the position his freshman year. Wunderlich could provide a weapon if Ole Miss can be assured they’re going to get three points once they get to the 35-yard line.

3. Octavious Cooley looks the part. He could provide Ole Miss more depth than they’ve had in a while at the tight end position. The Ole Miss offense isn’t the simplest in the world, so it may take the freshman a while to pick up on, but Cooley has all the physical tools to be one of the best tight ends that have come through Ole Miss.

4. If Fadol Brown doesn’t go, it’ll be interesting to see what the Rebels do on the defensive line against Florida State. They can move Breeland Speaks to defensive end and rely on Issac Gross and D.J. Jones on the inside, along with freshman Benito Jones. Speaks is skilled and talented enough to play the defensive end position, especially in a one-game situation, especially considering what Marquis Haynes brings to the table.

5. The NCAA cloud isn’t affecting Ole Miss on the field. It may be in some administration offices, but the Rebels are just ready to play football.

Hugh, I sincerely hope that all goes well with the Rebels this far, and remember also, you have the Lord Jesus in your corner so look up and all will be fine. I really look forward to the season.
