“5 at 5” Football Edition Installment #14, Original Analysis: Corner Preview
EDITOR’S NOTE: Counting down to the first week of Ole Miss football practice the week of August 15, HottyToddy.com’s own Collin Brister, former sports editor of the Daily Mississippian, will bring you exclusive “5 at 5” analyses of either A) the opponents Ole Miss will be facing this season or B) some background on Ole Miss’ players at each position. It’s being called “5 at 5” because each original piece will give you 5 key things to know, and we will post these stories at 5 p.m. every Monday-Friday.
NUMBER 1:
Key Returners
The Rebels return their two starters from the 2015 season at cornerback in Kendarius and Tony Bridges. Those two had their ups and downs throughout the season last year but also have tremendous upside. Bridges struggled against Arkansas, but three weeks later played the best game of his career against Mississippi State where he took an interception back for a touchdown to put the game away for good. Webster had a rough time in Memphis last season, but the sophomore rebounded the next week and had a great performance against Texas A&M. With the two having a year of experience as starting corners in the SEC, they’ll likely be much better this year.
NUMBER 2:
Reserves
The Rebels also return seniors Kailo Moore and Carlos Davis. Moore has unbelievable speed and came on strong towards the end of last season, while Davis has seen playing time over his first three seasons at Ole Miss. Moore and Davis provide great backup options at the cornerback position
NUMBER 3:
Key Additions
The Rebels have good many additions to the cornerback rotation this season. They redshirted Jalen Julius last season, and also return Cam Ordway who got playing time last season. If the Rebels could get consistent production from Ordway and Julius it could provide the Rebels great depth and allow them to sub in more players for fresh legs, a needed asset at corner.
NUMBER 4:
Bridges/Webster Length
The Rebels two starters are two of the longer corners in the SEC, as Webster and Bridges both are six feet tall. Webster especially could be a guy that makes the jump to the NFL after this season if he has a breakout year, as the corner has great length and plays the football extremely well.
NUMBER 5:
Analysis
This is one of more interesting positions on the defensive side of the football for Ole Miss going into the season. Admittedly Bridges and Webster struggled at times last year, but the two also had flashes of great play. The two starters with their length could pose problems for any set of receivers they come across. With the defensive line that Ole Miss has, the Rebels will likely be able to get pressure on the quarterback without having to blitz too often.
