Ole Miss Voted the Favorite Team in Mississippi

Our friends at RedditCFB ran a poll to find the favorite team in each state. Some where a little off, but Mississippi got it right.

Reddit CFB ran a poll to see who the favorite team was in each state. Some states are a little wacky, such as UAB winning Alabama. But Mississippi got it right, voting Ole Miss as the favorite team in Mississippi.

Dan Mullen on Ole Miss rivalry: ‘There’s not much I like about the school up north at all’

Hugh Freeze recently tweeted that he thinks Ole Miss’ annual Egg Bowl matchup with Mississippi State has gone “too far“.

The tweet was in response to a column written by The Clarion-Ledger columnist Hugh Kellenberger in which he examined the state of the rivalry, and how it has become fueled by hate. Dan Mullen was asked about the rivalry by Paul Finebaum on Monday at SEC Media Days and admitted that he wasn’t too fond of the Rebels.

“I think when you look at the big picture. Any rivalry, there is always that,” Mullen said. “I think people get too confused in the rivalries between the schools. There’s not much I like about the school up north at all. As a whole. But the individuals there’s nothing personal that comes with that. It’s a rivalry between the institutions.”

Baseball #ProRebs Update – MLB All-Star Break

Ole Miss Baseball has a history of student-athletes playing professionally following their careers as Rebels. Currently, six former Rebels are on Major League Baseball rosters, while 23 others are working their way up through the minor leagues. Throughout the summer, OleMissSports.com will update Rebel fans about the current #ProRebs making their mark on professional baseball diamonds across the country.

With Major League Baseball on its All-Star Break, former Rebel Drew Pomeranz will compete in the All-Star Game at 7 p.m. tonight on Fox. Here is a look at how the former Rebels are performing on the field during the 2016 season. For a complete look of season stats for #ProRebs, click here.

Major League Baseball Rebels

#30 Aaron Barrett | RHP | Washington Nationals
A reliever for the Washington Nationals, Barrett has yet to pitch in a game this season after undergoing Tommy John surgery last September. As he recovers from his surgery, he is on the club’s 60-day disabled list. Barrett has spent the last two seasons in the Nationals’ bullpen.

#8 Chris Coghlan | LF | Chicago Cubs 
Coghlan is currently on the 15-day disabled list after suffering a right rib cage strain (July 3). The former Rebel spent the past two seasons with the Chicago Cubs before the team traded him to the Oakland Athletics in February. However, he didn’t spend much time in Oakland. After 51 games with the A’s, Coghlan returned to the “Windy City” as the Cubs made a trade to get their prized utility player back. Since the June 9 trade, Coghlan has played in 19 games for the National League leaders, scoring nine runs. After being named National League Rookie of the Year in 2009, Coghlan has remained in the Majors and for eight seasons.

#2 Zack Cozart | SS | Cincinnati Reds
Cozart hit .300 over his last seven games prior to the All-Star break, which included home runs in three consecutive contests. In 80 games this season, the former Rebel is hitting .267 with 82 hits, 50 runs and 38 RBI as the leadoff hitter for the Cincinnati Reds. Among shortstops, he is one of the leaders in doubles (22) and home runs (14). With such a strong first half, Cozart was on the bubble to be named an All-Star, but he was not chosen. At the All-Star break, Cozart is already just one home run shy of his career high (15) set back in 2012. Cozart is in his fifth season as the Reds’ starting shortstop.  (VIDEO –July 6: Cozart hits a leadoff homer)

#31 Lance Lynn | RHP | St. Louis Cardinals
Lynn is another Major League Rebel that will be sidelined for the 2016 season. Like Barrett, Lynn underwent Tommy John surgery (November 2015) and is currently on the 60-day disabled list. As a focal point in the St. Louis Cardinals’ rotation for the past four seasons, the right-hander has started more games than any other pitcher on the team since 2012. Lynn is also the franchise leader in postseason appearances.

#13 Drew Pomeranz | LHP | San Diego Padres
Pomeranz received exciting news last week as he was named a National League All-Star and will represent the San Diego Padres in their home park tonight (7 p.m. CT on Fox). He is the first All-Star Rebel since Lance Lynn in 2012. Pomeranz has been on fire heading into the break, allowing just one earned run in 21.0 innings (0.43 ERA) over his last three outings. He pitched 7.0 innings in each of those starts and earned a pair of victories. In his final appearance before the All-Star break, Pomeranz tossed seven scoreless innings to collect a win over the Los Angeles Dodgers (July 7). Returning to the National League where he began his Major League career in 2011, the southpaw has been sharp with a 2.47 ERA in 17 starts. Pomeranz is 8-7 overall, posting 115 strikeouts over 102.0 innings. As an All-Star lefty, Pomeranz has become a popular name in trade talks as playoff contenders look to improve their rotation. #7 Seth Smith | RF | Seattle Mariners
Smith is another Rebel who entered the All-Star break swinging a hot bat. The former Rebel is hitting .314 over his past 15 games, which includes a streak of four straight contests with a homer (June 30-July 3). After back-to-back nights with three hits against the Orioles, he hit his first career grand slam to cap off a .471 (4 HR) weekend. In his ninth season as a regular in Major League Baseball, Smith is hitting .277 for the Seattle Mariners. The outfielder has played in 77 games during his second season in Seattle, tallying 39 runs and 41 RBI for the club. He also has seven doubles and 11 home runs at the plate. Minor League Baseball Rebels

#16 Will Allen | 1B | West Michigan Whitecaps (Class A) – Detroit Tigers
Over his last 10 games, Allen is hitting .324 to bump up his season batting average to .263. He led the West Michigan Whitecaps to a 15-10 victory over Great Lakes (July 5) by going 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI. In 81 games with the Class A affiliate, Allen has recorded 79 hits, 49 RBI and 25 runs. He also has 23 doubles to his credit, which ranks fourth in the Midwest League. Allen’s 42 RBI also crack the league’s top five among all hitters. The former Ole Miss All-American catcher has made the transition from behind the plate to first base.

#14 Austin Anderson| 3B | Delmarva Shorebirds (Class A) – Baltimore Orioles
Anderson has used three multi-hit games throughout his past 10 contests to bump up his season average. In a 14-2 win over the Lakewood BlueClaws (July 5), Anderson went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, which included a single off fellow former Rebel Jacob Waguespack. Through 32 games with the Delmarva Shorebirds, the third baseman has 25 hits and 11 RBI. Another 2014 All-American for Ole Miss, Anderson is in his first full season of professional baseball.

#11 Auston Bousfield | CF | El Paso Chihuahuas (Triple-A) – San Diego Padres
After spending the first half of the  season with the Double-A San Antonio Missions, Bousfield was promoted to the Triple-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres, the El Paso Chihuahuas (June 30). In nine games with the Chihuahuas, the former Ole Miss All-American is hitting .258 with five runs, three doubles and three RBI. Bousfield led his team to a victory over Albuquerque (July 5) with a three-hit and three-RBI performance that included a pair of doubles. The center fielder looks to keep producing as he’s one step away from the Majors.

#27 Matt Crouse | LHP | Toledo Mud Hens (Triple-A) – Detroit Tigers
Crouse has picked up a pair of victories over his last three starts, including a win over Norfolk in which the former Rebel allowed just one earned run over 7.0 innings (June 29). Starting out the year with the Double-A Erie SeaWolves, the lefty was called up to the Toledo Mud Hens (May 26), Triple-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. In nine starts with the Mud Hens, Crouse posts a 4-3 record with a 2.73 ERA over 56.0 innings. Crouse has earned a promotion in each of the past two seasons and is now just one step away from the big leagues.

#60 Chris Ellis | RHP | Gwinnett Braves (Triple-A) – Atlanta Braves
Ellis picked up his first victory in Triple-A during his last outing, tossing a complete game shutout in a rain-shortened game versus Charlotte (July 8). In fact, he has gone the distance in his last two starts due to weather ending the contests early. Ellis started the 2016 campaign with the Double-A Mississippi Braves and immediately made a major impact for the team. In 13 starts in Mississippi, Ellis went 8-2 with a 2.75 ERA over 78.0 innings, which earned him the starting nod in the 2016 Southern League All-Star Game. However, the righty was called up to the Triple-A Gwinnett Braves four days before the game and instead left to pitch for his new team, one step closer to Major League Baseball.

#32 David Goforth| RHP | Colorado Springs Sky Sox (Triple-A) – Milwaukee Brewers
Goforth has been busy out of the bullpen as of late, making four appearances over the past six days. Prior to that, he pitched a pair of scoreless innings to earn a relief victory over New Orleans (July 2). Currently, Goforth is with the Triple-A Colorado Springs Spring Sox, posting a 2-2 record with a 4.25 ERA in 27 appearances spanning 36.0 innings. He also has a 1-1 record and a pair of saves to his credit. He has spent the 2016 jumping up and down between the Milwaukee Brewers and Sky Sox. The former Rebel pitcher was called up by the Brewers twice, making seven appearances for the Major League Baseball team.

#40 Henri Lartigue | C | Williamsport Crosscutters (Class A Short Season) – Philadelphia Phillies
As one of the newest Pro Rebs, Lartigue is starting to find his groove at the plate. In 12 games for the Williamsport Crosscutters, a team that had former Rebel teammate Jacob Waguespack on its roster last season, Lartigue is hitting .255 with 12 hits, seven RBI and four runs.  Two days ago (July 10),he hit the first home run of his professional career. Earlier this year, Lartigue was the Rebels’ leading hitter and a Johnny Bench Award semifinalist. Now, he has begun his professional career after getting drafted in the seventh round of the 2016 MLB Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies.

#15 Braxton Lee | CF | Montgomery Biscuits (Double-A) – Tampa Bay Rays
Continuing his season in Double-A, Lee has recorded at least one hit in three of his last four games. The former Rebel has played in 70 games for the Montgomery Biscuits this season as the team’s leadoff hitter. He also has 18 runs, seven runs and seven stolen bases to hit credit. After leading the Charlotte Stone Crabs to a league championship last year, Lee was promoted to the Biscuits prior to the start of the 2016 campaign.

#66 Mike Mayers | RHP | Memphis Redbirds (Triple-A) – St. Louis Cardinals
Mayers has continued to be an important piece of the Memphis Redbirds’ rotation. He allowed only one run on five hits in 7.0 innings to collect a win over Omaha (June 30). In Memphis, Mayers has started eight contests, going 3-2 with a 2.49 ERA over 47.0 innings. Injuries plagued Mayers throughout the 2015 season, but the former Rebel is back to full health and making a push for the Majors. After going 5-2 with a 2.30 ERA in nine starts for the Springfield Cardinals, where he became a Texas League All-Star, Mayers was promoted to Triple-A.

#10 Alex Presley | RF | Lakeland Flying Tigers (Class A Advanced) – Detroit Tigers
After starting off the season in the Milwaukee Brewers organization, Presley signed with the Detroit Tigers July 8, his fifth team over the past seven seasons. He has played in two games for the Lakeland Flying Tigers, going 5-for-7 for a .714 average. Last night (July 11), Presley went 4-for-4 with three RBI and two runs; needless to say, his stay in Lakeland likely won’t last long. With the Brewers, Presley started out on fire in Triple-A to begin the 2016 season and earned a call up to the Majors (April 21). He played in 47 games for Milwaukee, tallying 23 hits, 12 runs, 11 RBI and three home runs.

 #9 Errol Robinson | SS | Ogden Raptors (Rookie) – Los Angeles Dodgers
Through 18 games as one of the newest Pro Rebs, Robinson has tallied 15 hits, 12 runs and eight RBI. He had the best game of his young career against Orem (July 1), going 3-for-5 with three runs, two stolen bases and one RBI. The fan favorite and starting shortstop at Ole Miss over the past three seasons, Robinson was drafted in the sixth round of the 2016 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers and decided to take his play to the professional level.

#17 Wyatt Short| LHP | Eugene Emeralds (Class A Short Season) – Chicago Cubs
Short is officially the newest Pro Reb, having signed July 10 and making his debut that night for the Eugene Emeralds.  The former Ole Miss closer pitched one scoreless inning versus Hillsboro (July 10), his first professional appearance. Short was drafted in the 13th round of the 2016 MLB Draft by the Chicago Cubs.

#34 Chad Smith| RHP | Batavia Muckdogs (Class A Short Season) – Miami Marlins
After making three appearances for the GCL Marlins, the Miami Marlins’ Rookie league team, Smith was called up to the Class A Batavia Muckdogs. The former Rebel has pitched in 3.0 innings over three relief outings for the Muckdogs.  Selected in the MLB Draft for the second straight year, this time in the 13th round by the Marlins, Smith decided his 2016 season at Ole Miss prepared him to make the jump to the pros.

#29 Matt Snyder | 1B | Trenton Thunder (Double-A) – New York Yankees
Snyder is currently on the disabled list and has not played in a game since June 11. The 2015 season also featured nagging injuries for the former Rebel. In five games with the Trenton Thunder this year, Snyder has gone 4-for-19 with two RBI and one run. He also played in three games with the Tampa Yankees, hitting at a .500 clip.

#22 Matt Tracy | LHP | Jacksonville Suns (Double-A) – Miami Marlins
Tracy is playing for this third team in 2016 as a member of the Jacksonville Suns, Double-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins. In three appearances for the Suns, he has a 1-0 record with a 4.26 ERA in 12.2 innings. His last time out, Tracy pitched 6.0 innings to earn a win over Birmingham (July 11). Despite going 3-1 as a member of the Trenton Thunder, Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, Tracy was released and needed to find a new home to continue his professional career. It didn’t take long as he was signed by the Marlins. The former Rebel southpaw made his debut for the organization June 28, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings of relief to earn a victory for the Jupiter Hammerheads before getting promoted to Jacksonville.

#32 Christian Trent | LHP | Arizona League Brewers (Rookie) – Milwaukee Brewers
A 2015 MLB draft pick of the Milwaukee Brewers, Trent has not started his 2016 campaign yet. Between the Arizona League Brewers and the Helena Brewers, two rookie league clubs for Milwaukee, Trent went 2-1 with a 4.04 ERA last season.

#30 Stuart Turner | C | Chattanooga Lookouts (Double-A) – Minnesota Twins
Turner has been on a tear as of late, riding a 12-game hitting streak and hitting .390 during that stretch. For the season, he has recorded 44 hits, 22 runs, 21 RBI, 12 doubles and four home runs at the plate. Meanwhile, he’s thrown out nine baserunners behind the dish. Turner is in his second season as the starting catcher for the Chattanooga Lookouts. The former Rebel catcher, the 2013 winner of the Johnny Bench Award, has played in 59 games this year for the Minnesota Twins’ Double-A affiliate.

#15 Jacob Waguespack | RHP | Lakewood BlueClaws (Class A) – Philadelphia Phillies
Following a rookie season in which he helped the Williamsport Crosscutters capture a division crown, Waguespack was promoted to the Lakewood BlueClaws. The former Rebel has continued to look impressive, going 4-1 with four saves in 28 appearances. Waguespack has punched out 40 hitters through 48.1 innings out of the bullpen.  In a non-save situation, he tossed a pair of scoreless innings in his last outing (July 9).

#28 Bobby Wahl | RHP | Midland RockHounds (Double-A) – Oakland Athletics
Wahl has been dominant on the mound, not allowing an earned run in his last 10 outings (10.2 innings). Through that stretch, he has earned three saves and recorded 15 strikeouts. Wahl has been an effective reliever in his second year with the Midland RockHounds. The 2013 All-American has a 2.67 ERA and 34 strikeouts over 30.1 innings spanning 23 appearances. Wahl is holding opposing hitters to a .216 average at the plate.

#18 Scott Weathersby | RHP | Lancaster JetHawks (Class A Advanced) – Houston Astros
Weathersby was called up to the Corpus Christi Hooks for a relief outing and pitched two scoreless innings for the Double-A club (July 7). However, the former Rebel returned to the Lancaster JetHawks two days later. A reliable reliever throughout his Ole Miss career, Weathersby has transitioned into a starting role for the Class A Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros. Eight of Weathersby’s 15 outings have been starts. In 60.0 innings, he has recorded 43 strikeouts and holds a 2-4 record.

#6 J.B. Woodman | OF | Vancouver Canadians (Class A Short Season) – Toronto Blue Jays
Woodman has hit .290 over his past 10 games. In 19 contests with the Vancouver Canadians, the former Rebel has tallied six doubles and 10 RBI. After the Toronto Blue Jays picked the Ole Miss outfielder in the second round of the 2016 MLB Draft, the collegiate All-American signed with the club and was sent to the Canadians.

#10 Austin Wright | LHP | Mobile BayBears (Double-A) – Arizona Diamondbacks
Wright has made 13 relief appearances for the Mobile BayBears and has not allowed a run in seven of his last 10 outings. Moreover, he’s pitched multiple innings in five of those games. The former Rebel has 23 strikeouts in 20.2 innings for the Double-A affiliate, holding opposing hitters to a .234 average. Following a year of independent league baseball in 2015, Wright signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks for the 2016 campaign. He immediately made his mark with the Class A Visalia Rawhide, going 2-0 with a 0.46 ERA in 16 relief outings. Adding 26 strikeouts over 19.2 innings, the former Rebel earned a promotion to the BayBears.

#9 Alex Yarbrough | 2B | Arkansas Travelers (Double-A) – Los Angeles Angels
Yarbrough has knocked the cover off the ball during a current six-game road trip with the Arkansas Travelers. Recording at least one in each game, including give multi-hit contests, he is hitting at a .462 clip during the hot streak. This season, Yarbrough has played in 78 games for the Travelers, Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels. The former Rebel has tallied 82 hits for a .263 batting average to go along with 31 RBI and 29 runs. Yarbrough has also showed some pop at the plate to the tune of 19 doubles, two triples and two home runs. The second baseman is in his fifth year with the Angels organization.
