Top-5 Players Positions for 2017 in Mississippi

Mississippi is a hot-bed for football talent, while a lot of it goes under the radar. Our recruiting expert Tucker Italiano tells you who you need to know.

Having lived in Mississippi my entire life, I know how tough it is for in-state kids to get the recognition they deserve in recruiting circles. There are a lot of talented Mississippi kids and every year, it seems a few breakout their senior years and earn big time division one offers.

Looking back, Chris Jones was a low two-star defensive end from Houston, MS. By the end of his senior year, he was one of the most highly recruited players in the nation. When all was said and done, he was a 5-star, number twenty overall player in the country.

For that reason, I have decided to come out with my own personal top five at each position in the state for 2017 to watch. Any one of these kids could develop and with a breakout senior year, earn an offer from not only Ole Miss, but other big time programs as well.

I combined defensive ends and defensive tackles to just defensive line because of lack of 2017 prospects. I also extended the athletes and linebackers because there are plenty to watch.

When he isn’t rapping in the studio, Chad “Swag” Kelly spends his time torching SEC defenses, to the tune of 4,042 passing yards and 31 touchdowns in 2015. The Ole Miss Rebel led his team to a 10-3 record last season, capping off the year with a dominant Sugar Bowl victory over Oklahoma State. Regarded by many as one of the top quarterbacks in the 2017 draft class, Kelly posses the talent and tools needed to be an NFL signal-caller. There are off the field issues, however. Ole Miss is Kelly’s third college. Will talent outweigh the negatives?

Measurables

6-2

215 pounds

4.76 second 40-yard dash

Strengths

Chad, the nephew of Buffalo Bills legend Jim Kelly, put up ridiculous numbers in his first year at Ole Miss. He is, statistically, one of the most productive quarterbacks in college football. He knows how to set up his receivers for big plays while also delivering spot-on throws; Kelly completed 65 percent of his passes in 2015. All the while, he’s posting those statistics against elite SEC defenses. He threw for 341 yards and 3 touchdowns against Alabama, the third-best overall defense, en route to an enormous upset.
