Oxford, Lafayette Residents Kick Off Fourth of July with a Community Dance
This evening the Oxford and Lafayette residents came out to celebrate Independence Day early this weekend with a community dance.
This year’s dance was held in the Community Pavilion (previously Old Armory) on University Avenue. This dance is a callback to gatherings that would take place on the Square to kick off Fourth of July festivities.
Sponsored by Yoknapatawpha Arts Council (YAC), the dance kicked off at 5:00 p.m. and went on until 7:00 p.m. to the melodies by Valley Hill. The city’s fire department brought out Fire Engine No. 1 as well as the jaws of life for people to see.
AmeriCorps VISTA member working with YAC, Meghan Gallagher shares her thoughts on tonight’s annual dance.
Here’s a snapshot of annual community dance. Y’all have a happy Independence Day weekend!
