Northwest’s Jordan Barnes to Continue Pro Career with Birmingham Bloomfield Beavers
Former Northwest Mississippi Community College center fielder Jordan Barnes, a 15th round selection by the New York Yankees in 2013, will continue his professional baseball career this summer in the newly-created United Shore Professional Baseball League.
The USPBL will launch in May 2016 with an initial slate of three teams that will play a full 75-game schedule at Jimmy John’s Field in downtown Utica. The USPBL will be the first league in history to feature best practices such as having all of its games played on prime dates, typically Thursday to Sunday from Memorial Day through Labor Day – the very finest months of weather in Michigan.
Barnes will play for the Birmingham Bloomfield Beavers, one of three teams in the league, with first pitch of the season set for Monday, May 30 against the Utica Unicorns.
Barnes spent the past three seasons in the Yankees organization with the GCL Yankees down in Tampa, Fla. In 130 career games, he hit .200 with eight doubles, two triples, two home runs, 30 RBIs and 20 stolen bases. His numbers got progressively better each season.
As the 464th overall pick in 2013 by the Yankees, Barnes is the fourth highest draft choice in the school’s baseball history behind Cody Reed (2nd, 46th overall), Bill Selby (13th, 366th overall) and Chad Cregar (15th, 458th overall). Northwest has 17 all-time MLB draft picks, including five in the last three years.
The Arlington, Tenn., product hit .324 with 10 doubles, three triples, a home run, 24 RBIs and 31 runs scored in his only season in a Northwest uniform in 2013. A First Team All-MACJC selection, Barnes was also a team-best 22-for-22 in stolen bases with a team-leading .475 on-base percentage.
Barnes is one of three former Rangers currently in professional baseball. Dalton Dulin played last season with the Auburn Doubledays (Nationals) and Cody Reed is with the Louisville Bats (Reds) in Triple-A.
