On Saturday, May 14, 2016, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), in partnership with United Way of Oxford and Lafayette County, will host its annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive.
Observed in over 10,000 cities, this is the nation’s largest single-day food drive. All food collected in Oxford and Lafayette County will benefit The Pantry. It is the goal of the local NALC and United Way of Oxford and Lafayette County to fully restock The Pantry shelves. To accomplish this feat, your assistance is needed.
On May 14, residents are encouraged to leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods such as canned soup, canned vegetables, canned meats, pasta, peanut butter, rice, or cereal next to their mailbox. As the letter carriers deliver mail, they will collect the food.
According to the Robert Wood Foundation, 21 percent of Lafayette County residents experienced food insecurity during the past year. Food insecurity is when an individual does not have access to enough food for an active, healthy lifestyle.
The residents’ generosity will help ensure that everyone in the community has food for a healthy lifestyle.
Last year’s nationwide drive collected approximately 71 million pounds of non-perishable. It was the 12th consecutive year that letter carriers have collected more than 70 million pounds of food. The drive is held each year on the second Saturday in May.
