Mississippi Celebrates National Day of Prayer
The National Day of prayer was celebrated yesterday on May 5, across the nation, and the state of Mississippi joined in too.
People of faith joined Gov. Phil Bryant and other Mississippi leaders and citizens at the Mississippi capital to pray for the state and the country.
“It was a beautiful day at the Mississippi State Capitol for the National Day of Prayer,” Gov. Bryant said. “I enjoyed seeing everyone in attendance.”
Another prominent member of the journalism world, Barbie Bassett, meteorologist for WLBT in Jackson, joined the prayer service for the mass media and entertainment sector. Bassett prayed and spent time with First Lady Barbara Bryant at the service.
“Was asked to give the prayer for the mass media & entertainment industry at the National Day of Prayer and spent some time with First Lady Deborah Bryant. Such a sweetheart,” Bassett said on her Facebook page.
Oxford and Lafayette County Prayer
Oxonians participated in the National Day of Prayer by taking turns praying in the Lafayette County Courthouse for a total of 24 hours. The Community Church in Oxford, pastored by former Ole Miss Football team Chaplin, Fish Robinson, had two slots on Wednesday and Thursday to pray.
“With the National Day of Prayer being the first Thursday of every May, we at Community Church have been participating in it for the past three years,” Fish Robinson said. “Anytime we have the opportunity to come together to pray about our city, county, state and country we want to take part in that opportunity. Even in election years when we elect leaders, it’s important for prayer. It’s all about prayer.”
Saltillo Prayer
American Family Radio, a national Christian radio station, is located in Tupelo, Mississippi. Morning host, J.J. Jasper, participated in the National Day of Prayer in Saltillo, Mississippi, in Lee County.
“It was a privilege to speak yesterday morning at the mayor’s prayer breakfast in Saltillo,Mississippi,” Jasper said on his Facebook page. “What a blessing to know that people all across the nation were crying out to God on the National Day of Prayer!”
Greenville Prayer
Impact Church in Greenville, Mississippi, participated by having prayer set up for all in its parking lot. Many other cities and counties participated in the National Day of Prayer in Mississippi from Grenada to Charleston and to the Gulf Coast. The entire state of Mississippi was covered in prayer.
“The mission of the National Day of Prayer Task Force is to mobilize prayer in America and to encourage personal repentance and righteousness in the culture,” NationalDayofPrayer.org said in its mission statement.
Thursday’s prayer was the 65th annual National Day of Prayer and the next one will be on May 4, 2017.
