J.D. Williams Library to Host ‘Pet a Pup’ Event Saturday, May 7
The finals week is looming ahead as the University of Mississippi students begin preparing for a week-long study session in the J.D. Williams Library. Luckily for those studying this Saturday, there will be puppies!
The Pet a Pup event is this Saturday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Library Classoom 106D at the J.D. Williams Library. This event is sponsored by Library Ambassadors.
Melissa Dennis, who is with the Library Ambassadors, said, “We want to provide our students a way to de-stress during finals week. Our student association, Library Ambassadors, takes the lead to organize and host this event each spring and fall the weekend before finals week.”
Well into its fourth year, the event features certified and in-training therapy dogs from Oxford Therapets (formerly Cedar Winds Dog Group.)
Dennis said, “This community partnership has been a positive way for the community to interact with students. The dog owners and students connect in surprising ways; some students come back each year to see specific dogs and their owners just to unwind and talk.”
The presence of therapy dogs can help the potentially homesick students relax before studying hard for the final stretch of the spring semester before they can drive home for their summer break.
“Don’t let life stress you out. Pets can be very comforting, and college students may be missing their pets back at home, so bringing in some dogs to the library lets us provide them with a way to de-stress,” Dennis said.
