Ole Miss Women’s Basketball Heads to Costa Rica in August
This August the Ole Miss women’s basketball team will venture south of the border for a 10-day foreign tour in Costa Rica. The Rebels will head to Heredia and Herradura, Costa Rica August 1-10 and will play three exhibition games during their stay.
“There is not a more exciting time to be apart of our program as we move into a new year and being able to take our team to Costa Rica for ten days in August speaks volumes of the commitment our great university has towards women’s basketball,” said head coach Matt Insell. “It gives us a early start in meshing our returners and new players together on and off the court for what is going to be a special season for our basketball program.”
Ole Miss will bring its entire 2016-17 team including incoming freshmen Shelby Gibson (Murfreesboro, Tenn./Oakland), Kaitlyn Rodgers (Birmingham, Ala./Wenonah) and Bree Glover (Glasgow, Ky./Glasgow HS) as well as Kentucky transfer Chrishae Rowe (Riverside, Calif./Kentucky). The 10-day tour will feature exhibition games against the University of Ottawa and another team to be determined at a later date.
This will be Ole Miss’ first international trip since taking a trip to Canada in 2011 where they played four games and explored Vancouver. The Rebels also went on an international trip when they traveled to the Bahamas in 2007.
Per NCAA rules, incoming players who take and pass at least three credits during summer school are eligible to travel on the trip. Additionally, the Rebels will be able to get a jumpstart on the 2016-17 season with 10 practices prior to their trip to Costa Rica. All games will be played in accordance with FIBA rules.
The Ole Miss players are also looking forward to the trip, as it will be the first time they have traveled internationally as a team.
“I’m so excited,” said rising senior Bretta Hart. “It’s something I’ve been looking forward to since coach Insell told us about it. I’ve always wanted to go out the country and what better place to go to than Costa Rica with my teammates.”
Rising junior Shandricka Sessom is equally excited about sharing the trip with her teammates.
“Any place other than Mississippi with my teammates, you can’t beat that,” said Sessom. “I’m looking forward to experiencing Costa Rica with my teammates in August”
