Riverside Voodoo: a Psychedelic Blues Rock Band Founded in Oxford
The Double Decker Arts Festival, presented by Caterpillar, kicked off its music lineup Saturday night with Riverside Voodoo, a psychedelic blues rock and roll band that originated right here in Oxford.
The group is a four-man band made up of all University of Mississippi students and alumni. Guitarist Jake Horner and keyboard player Mac Jones are currently seniors enrolled at University of Mississippi. Jonathan Peters, the band’s drummer and vocalist, has already graduated from the university with a bachelor’s in finance. The same goes for bass player Watson Horner, who graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Law and now lives in Jackson, Mississippi to continue his studies.
Their Ole Miss served as the place where the four members would meet in 2011 and grow into the band they are today. Cousins Watson and Jake Horner played together for a year before running into Mac Jones and Jonathan Peters. The four came together as a band and decided to first call themselves Doc Voodoo. Doc was dropped and replaced with Riverside to give the band a more Southern identity, but mainly because Riverside just had a groovy sound to it.
Riverside Voodoo went on to produce two studio albums, including their first self-entitled album in 2014 and then their most recent one titled “Metaphysical Seduction” in 2015. These albums can be found on iTunes and music websites like Spotify and SoundCloud.
They played a mixture of songs from both albums Saturday, including songs that will be featured on their new album.
Touring last summer to Birmingham, Atlanta, Nashville and other big cities in the Southeast has brought the band members closer together and given them the chemistry to collaborate and create their true sound.
The fans will be able to hear variation in Riverside Voodoo’s sound in its next album that is currently in the making. The group has already recorded around eight or nine songs and is looking to release the album as soon a few more tracks are added and other finishing touches are complete.
Riverside Voodoo looks to continue making music, booking shows and keep jamming like they did Saturday at Double Decker, a venue that will always love to hear their hometown boys play.
