Since 2009, The University of Mississippi’s Office of Sustainability holds a Green Week celebration for students and local residents to bring attention to environmental issues on campus.

This week has concluded the eighth annual Green Week at the university.

With help from other campus offices, including landscape services, the UM garden, the environmental studies minor program, Ole Miss Outdoors, and others,
a series of events are organized throughout the week to get people involved and educate audiences on the topic of sustainability.

“Green Week is extremely important because it may be the first time that a participant is learning about a particular issue or the importance of sustainable behaviors,” said Project Coordinator Lindsey Abernathy.

The main goal of the week’s events is to help build the environmental consciousness of the Oxford community and create awareness with environmental issues. It also helps others become aware of the resources that are available in the community to live a more sustainable life.

This year, the event focused on the lead crisis in Flint and Jackson as well as other environmental topics, such as food waste.

A tree appreciation walk was held this week along with an Earth Day keynote speaker, a film screening, arbor day tree planting, a guided earth day nature and yoga hike, among many more events.

“As a fairly new student to the university, this was my first time getting to participate in Green Week and learning about all the many ways I can help out, even in the slightest bit, has made a major impact on me,” said sophomore Madeline Lewis.

Abernathy said this week is set to help participants realize that their actions have an impact beyond what they might be able to immediately see.

“We all have control over our actions, and we can make a choice to live in a way that is best for people and the planet,” Abernathy said.
