Oxford Keeps Going Back for Its Favorite ‘Cup’
Upon opening in March 2014, Cups Café quickly became one of Oxford’s hot spots. Whether to study or just grab a cup of coffee, customers have embraced Cups as the one of the newest cafés in a town filled with other options. Owner Lee Bowie has a simple premise for what keeps people coming back.
“Oxford is big enough now where it needs more of what it already has, but we have a really good product and the shop itself has a really good atmosphere, and people really enjoy being there,” Bowie said.
Cups has everything a customer would want from a cafe menu, but what sets Cups apart from its competitors is a commitment to the state of Mississippi, according to barista Kendall White.
“All of our products and ingredients are local to Mississippi, which is not only unique, but it supports our state which is really important,” White said.
The menu isn’t the only part of Cups that showcases Mississippi, the artwork hung throughout the cafe supplied by local artists from the Oxford area.
“I love how we support local art community, anyone can bring in art to display and I think that’s really one of the best parts about the atmosphere at Cups,” Barista Morgan McClellion said.
Cups has not only become a hit with Oxford residents, but also with another very important group of people, the students. With free Wi-Fi, spacious tables and booths, Cups lends itself to students looking for a place to work, study or just to get away. This is especially true during finals week, when Cups is open 24/7 to make sure students have a place to relax and get their work done during a stressful time.
“Ever since Cups opened, it’s the only place I’ll go whenever I feel like I need to get work done,” said Aubree Grove, a junior at the University of Mississippi. “The library is always crowded and the coffee machine at my apartment doesn’t make coffee that tastes anything like theirs. I should’ve just brought a pillow there during finals week last semester since I was there so often.”
Cups has numerous locations throughout the Jackson area. Cups café in Oxford is located at 1501 Jackson Ave. W. Suite 103, and is open Monday – Saturday from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.
