Oxford-University Methodist Church Prepares to Build Two-Level Parking Deck
The Oxford Historic Preservation Commissions is holding a regular meeting this evening at 5:30 p.m. in the City Hall courtroom.
A majority of the topics on the agenda include expansions or additions, new roofs, new fences and upgraded certain outdoor features of historic homes around Oxford.
Among the list of upgrades and construction is the Oxford- University United Methodist Church expansion and demolition to some of its historic buildings and the construction of a two-level parking deck.
According to A2H, the construction will allow for more “friendly landscape” at the northeast entry of the church. The new parking deck is going to allow a greater connection to the church and the Square and provide more parking for church members.
“The new parking deck would help to strengthen the edges of this site, providing a more logical connection to the existing downtown,” A2H said.
The call to action during the meeting also calls for the demolition of the 1937 building on the church campus, which is the original church sanctuary, another nearby building and the north parking lot to complete the two-level parking deck.
“Earthwork demolition will include excavation of the ground under the north parking lot in order to reach the foundation grade and provide some storm water detainage,” Oxford- University United Methodist Church said.
The brick and limestone to the parking deck and other expansions will match the existing brick and limestone of the church. The church assures that all pre-existing trees that are not directly disturbed by construction will be kept and maintained.
“The parking structure has been notched back to provide space for plantings to soften the corner and obscure the transformers as much as possible,” the church said. “There will be a columbarium plaza designed for the space between Westly Hall the existing sanctuary.”
