Payton Green to be New Station Manager of NewsWatch Ole Miss
Payton Green was chosen to be the new station manager of NewsWatch Ole Miss. Dean Norton of the Meek School of Journalism and New Media, Pat Thompson, administrator of the Student Media Center, Dr. Nancy M. Dupont, NewsWatch advisor and previous NewsWatch Station Manger Browning Stubbs all felt Green was fit for the job.
Green recently received the Dean’s Award for his outstanding service for the Meek School of Journalism and New Media and the Student Media Center.
“What we look for is someone who is familiar, but also has his or her own ideas to make it relevant to the campus and his students.” Dupont said.
Green suggested new staff positions and ideas on how the show can run more smoothly. His goals for the show include boosting NewsWatch’s digital presence, hiring more beat reporters and to increase Associated Student Body coverage.
Green started working for NewsWatch his freshman year. He worked as an anchor and a weather reporter.
“My freshman year, when I first started this, I never would’ve imagined I would be in charge of this, but I’ve been looking forward to it for quite a while” Green said.
He then served as a producer. Payton felt confident enough to fill the news director position after NewsWatch’s coverage of Dan Jones non-renewal for chancellor.
“That was the first time I really felt like I am a journalist because I got to do what journalism is all about, which is a check on our public officials,” Green said. “It was something that people really wanted onsets to, and we were the people giving those onsets.”
Dr. Dupont encouraged him to apply for the station manager position.
“He’s got the right attitude for the job, and he’s very well respected by the staff,” said Dr. Dupont.
Lauren Layton, NewsWatch producer, said, “Payton is just always upbeat and even when things are going crazy he keeps his composure. he’s professional but he puts the right amount of fun into it.”
