Ole Miss Softball Comes Up Short to No. 2 Florida

Sophomore Kayla Landwehrmier was solid in her first start of 2016 going the distance, but the Rebels’ offensive attack wasn’t enough as No. 2 Florida topped Ole Miss, 4-2, Sunday afternoon at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
Landwehrmier, who had started just three games prior all in 2015, tied her career high in innings pitched with just the second complete game of her two-year career. She gave up four runs, three walks, allowed eight hits and struck out four in the loss.
Ole Miss scored single runs in the fifth and seventh getting within two runs twice. After Florida plated two early thanks to a two-run home run, the Rebels broke up the no-hitter in the fifth off Ashton Lampton’s single through the left side. Elantra Cox was hit by a pitch before Hailey Lunderman reached on a fielders choice.
After Miranda Strother put down a bunt single, Syrett punched through the Rebels’ first run on a fielders choice that scored Lampton. From there, the Gators added a run in the seventh off a solo blast, before Lampton provided a spark to start the final frame with a solo home run to left center, her third of 2016.
The Rebels had chances though, stranding seven in the contest. Ole Miss left two on in the second, and stranded the bases loaded in the fourth.
Sunday’s game was featured as Military Appreciation Day, as members of the United State Military were in attendance and featured as part of the game day promotions. An outstanding crowd of 1,000+ witnessed the series finale, pushing the attendance in the series to 3,000+.

Ole Miss returns to action Wednesday for a 5 p.m. contest against UT-Martin at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
