The Oxford Commons Shifts Focus to Families in the Oxford Community

With Oxford in the midst of unprecedented growth, the demand for housing has continued to rise. While much of the development has centered around student housing, The Oxford Commons turns its focus to a family friendly community.

Located off of Highway 7 at Sisk Avenue, The Oxford Commons began construction in June 2015, and has begun to bring families to the Oxford area, even if they had left at some point.

Design coordinator, Dawn Lipscomb, said, “Oxford is a great place to raise a family, and as people go out and live their lives and live in bigger cities than Oxford, they always want to come back.”

Being close to the University of Mississippi, Lipscomb also pointed out that The Oxford Commons appeals to alumni, retirees, those who are looking to purchase a weekend home to be used during football weekends or just for a chance to come back to Oxford at a moment’s notice.

Beth McKay and her husband both graduated from Ole Miss and decided to relocate from Seattle in 2015. After searching all over Oxford, they found The Oxford Commons and became the fourth residents of the development.

“I think the location and proximity to the Square and so many different amenities is extremely attractive, and we are really looking forward to the addition of the retail space,” McKay said. “Living in Seattle, we were able to walk to a ton of shops and restaurants. So knowing that there is going to be way to not have to get into our cars to go everywhere was a big deal.”

With the slogan “Close to everything, Far from Ordinary,” The Oxford Commons is in walking distance to both Oxford High School and Della Davidson Elementary School and will be in a prime location near a new retail hub set to break ground in the summer of 2016. The Oxford Commons is just over a mile away from the historic Oxford Square where there are plenty of shops, restaurants and community centered events throughout the year. Sidewalks will be in place, allowing residents to comfortably walk from their homes to the surrounding area.

“It’s going to be a fun family environment that people want today,” Lipscomb said. “We really want to be a big part of the schools and the community.”

The Oxford Commons is being developed by Blackburn Communities and offers traditional French country style homes. Homes in The Oxford Commons community are available with three or four bedrooms ranging from 1,700 to just over 3,100 square feet. The Oxford Commons, when completed, will consist of 1,000 homes starting from the low $300,000 range.
