“April Fools Day was a classroom holiday in Ridgeland where I grew up, so by fourth grade I was jaded to ‘electric handshakes’ and fake barfs. I thought I’ve seen it all until one April Fools’ eve where I never again trusted a can of peanut brittle. My Dad was gleefully shaking a can as noisily as he could for his deaf daughter when he offered the can for me to snack on. Since I was certain Mom was cooking something I would probably hate, I accepted without much inspection when suddenly a black hideous thing smacked me in the face. I think my screams made my parents nearly as deaf as I am. I thought this old prank was genius, but my teachers quickly saw through the snake-in-can joke. Although, it was fail-proof against my cats, bless their hearts.”
Randall Haley – Social media editor
“When I was little one April Fool’s Day, I waited for my Dad to come home during his lunch break and told him that our brown lab was hit by a car. Later that day, while I was outside playing, the dog was actually hit by a car! I called my Dad crying, ‘Our dog was really hit this time! I promise it’s not a joke!’ My Dad said, ‘Oh I can tell because you’re crying this time!’ The dog was okay after the hit, but I thought it was weird that I said one thing and then it actually happened.” Since then, Randall has been careful with what she jokes about on April Fools Day because it just might come true. So this year she says, “Ole Miss will win big against MSU. Fail State.”
Emily Newton – Experience Oxford editor
“I like to pull pranks when no one is expecting them, so I usually don’t pull April Fool’s pranks- not since I tried to pull silly ones on my parents as a little girl. You know the ones. ‘Mom! You got a spider in your hair!’ type of pranks. Your mom does the best she can to ‘get scared’ and you think you really have accomplished something. I miss childhood!”

“Some of my best buds literally stole my Quintana Roo triathlon racing bike out of my Jeep and placed it for sale on a wall rack in the Pro Shop at Wimbleton Sportsplex in Memphis. Two days later, the Jeep and bike were really stolen (together) out of the same parking lot. The Jeep was found almost destroyed about a week later on the Wolf River Trails, and the bike (which was worth more than the Jeep) was never recovered. Good times!”
