Rebels Host Pro Day for Unprecedented NFL Contingent

ole miss pro dayThe eyes of the football world were on the Manning Center on Monday as an unprecedented contingent of 63 NFL representatives from all 32 teams, including five general managers, watched 19 former Rebels go through drills, highlighted by projected first-round picks Laremy TunsilLaquon Treadwell and Robert Nkemdiche.

“It’s a great day for Ole Miss football,” Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze said. “To have the coverage we had here, it’s another day that we can emphasize to America and to all the people out there that follow college football that our program is taking another step in our journey.”

Tunsil, who is considered a top candidate for the No. 1 overall pick held by the Tennessee Titans, put up 34 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press with both the Titans’ head coach Mike Mularkey and general manger Jon Robinson in attendance. That mark would have tied the best bench press at the combine.

Treadwell, who elected not to run the 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, clocked in at an unofficial 4.63 on Monday.

“The experience was great, being out there with my teammates one last time and seeing those guys compete,” Treadwell said. “For myself, I did well. I’m proud of myself. I got it over with, and I’m ready to look forward to the next step.”

While much of the focus was on the “big three” of Tunsil, Treadwell and Nkemdiche, the event gave many other players the opportunity to impress NFL teams.

“When you have three first rounders, that’s how you find diamonds in the rough,” Chief Brown said. “You can bring on guys they don’t get to see a lot. Those guys shine on the big stage, you get more Malcolm Butlers and guys like that.”

Cody Core recorded the best vertical of the day with a jump of 37.5”, improving his mark at the Combine by five inches.

Some notable unofficial 40 times of those not invited to the NFL Combine include Trae Elston running a time of 4.46, Jaylen Walton at 4.50, Mike Hilton at 4.55, Chief Brown at 4.60 and Channing Ward at 4.74.

“You always want your kids to get opportunities,” Freeze said. “I’m on a mission right now to make sure our young men have an opportunity to do something productive that changes their families’ lives after football. In the meantime, you know that’s a big part of who they are. We want them to get chances and opportunities to continue to play. Anything that helps get them those opportunities is a good thing, a very positive thing.”

The NFL Draft is scheduled for April 28-30 in Chicago, Illinois. The last time Ole Miss had multiple first-round NFL Draft selections was 2009, when Michael Oher went 23rd overall to the Baltimore Ravens and Peria Jerry was picked 24th overall by the Atlanta Falcons.

With Pro Day behind him, Laquon Treadwell is ready to fulfill his NFL dream

Laquon Treadwell was one of several premier draft prospects that scouts from the National Football League and local media came to see at Monday’s Ole Miss Pro Day. And after a series of physical tests and drills, Treadwell felt good and appeared focused about what’s in store for him as an NFL wideout.

In February, Treadwell had the opportunity to run the 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine but didn’t feel quite comfortable with doing so. Today inside the Manning Center, the 6-foot-2 receiver clocked unofficial times of 4.65 and 4.63 in the 40-yard dash.

As always, the hard-working Treadwell saw room for improvement but was satisfied with his overall results. “I am glad with what I ran,” Treadwell commented on his own performance. “I was proud of myself. I wanted to run better, of course. But I was proud with what I ran. It was a lot of pressure, because you want to do your best. Me being a competitor, I want to look good and do it the best way I can.

“And I work extremely hard, so to just get it past me and not have to run a 40 again is what I meant by when I said ‘I’m glad this is over.’ Today was fun.’”

Most importantly, Treadwell was as impressive as always in the drills he ran in front of his former teammates, former coaching staff and family members. He ran passing routes as if it was game day. His hands looked glued to the football on almost every snap.

Laremy Tunsil flexes his muscle, Laquon Treadwell disappoints at Ole Miss pro day

One Ole Miss star solidified his elite status on Monday, while another cast further doubts about his speed.

Rebels offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil might be the best player in the 2016 NFL Draft class, and we were reminded that he’s one of the strongest

After opting not to work out at the NFL Combine, Tunsil impressed the 63 NFL representatives in attendance at Ole Miss pro day by hoisting 34 reps on the bench press. Tunsil’s mark of 34 would have been tied with Arizona State offensive guard Christian Westerman for the most among all players who participated at the Combine.

It wasn’t as great of a day for wide receiver Laquon Treadwell, who skipped the drills at the Combine to spend more time preparing for his pro day. Treadwell’s performance in the 40-yard dash was roughly what scouts expected, and his best time was an unofficial 4.63 seconds on his second attempt. Treadwell’s first attempt was slightly slower.

Somehow, Tunsil found a way to improve his already-top-notch draft stock. The only real question has been whether the Tennessee Titans will take him with the No. 1 overall pick. Coach Hugh Freeze said he believes Tunsil is certainly worthy of being taken first overall during an interview with NFL Network’s Mike Mayock.
