19 Reasons for Moving to Oxford

Ladies and gentlemen, let’s cut through the chase and call it as it is. None of us are getting any younger and tomorrow is never guaranteed. Relish each and every day as it could be your last.

Where do you prefer to spend the fourth quarter of your life as some so eloquently phrase it? Here’s three more reasons than even Connie Stevens considered:

1. The overall quality of life. It doesn’t get much better than this. Having lived in 11 states, I can speak from actual experiences, not theories.

2. The natural beauty/four seasons. March, April and May are months (among many) when being here is an added bonus.

3. The word boring is not part of Oxford’s vocabulary. Compare this statement to your current location.

4. The ever changing interaction with youth. We may not have the fountain, but being around young people is exciting and stimulating.

5. Getting better is better than being good. Oxford continues to reinvent itself with new and interesting properties and developments. The influx of investment is staggering!

6. Access to City Hall. Mayor Patterson has an open door policy. How refreshing is this!

7. Never ending hospitality. The friendliness of this community is overwhelming. People here are basically nice, twelve months a year, not just at Christmas

8. Safety. Mayor Patterson once told me that in Oxford you can travel anywhere in the city 24/7 and feel secure. I have never tested this theory, however I am a true believer.

9. The Square. This is our rallying place. It gets continuously better. Having a cocktail in late afternoon overlooking the historical setting, there is no place I would rather be!

10. Having the most beautiful college campus in America is a super magnet that most other communities dream about.

11. Cultural happenings. The arts are alive and well here with an agenda that expands annually.

12. For sports junkies, welcome to a college football powerhouse. Hugh Freeze has made Ole Miss football great again. Even without $11 billion, he found a way to rediscover past glory.

13. The restaurants and retail offerings. Years ago we had to travel to Memphis for an exceptional meal. No longer! The options here are many and diverse.

14. The Oxford Country Club. One of the best kept secrets in the community that is slowly leaking out. And a new clubhouse is nearing completion!

15. The parks and in particular Lamar Park. A treasure that our former Mayor left as her legacy among other great visions she had.

16. Wildlife and nature. It never ceases to amaze me what is roaming around in Lafayette County. You might be surprised without having Sgt. Pepper to guide you.

17. Entertainment. Music, trivia nights, festivals, concerts….it’s year round nonstop.

18. Our churches. We are a Christian community for the most part that embraces other cultures and religions. Prejudiced, we’re not…open minded we are!

19. Last but not least….the almighty dollar. True, our taxes are not the lowest, but the cost of living here is palatable. Having lived in New York and New Jersey (among the 11 in the first point), Oxford is a pleasant change. Even my hometown of Nashville is in another cost of living league.

We could go on and on by mentioning healthcare, economic opportunities and so much more. However, I believe everyone gets the picture. And it doesn’t take a John Grisham novel to spell it out. I wasn’t born here, however, I found my way even without the yellow brick road!
