Ole Miss ASB Hosts International Student Town Hall Meeting
The Ole Miss Associate Student Body hosted an International Student Town Hall Meeting Thursday, March 3, 2016, at the Student Union.
The meeting was open to international and domestic students, faculty, staff and the rest of the student body. Different representatives from various departments on campus attended to hear the students’ concerns.
“The focus is to hear back from international and domestic students whether it’s positive or negative,” said Rob Bridges, ASB president.
Students gave feedback on things that could be provided to make their educational journey better. For a lot of international students, transportation has been a major problem. Since most international and exchange students do not have access to cars, they rely on the bus system to get them to class and other places in Oxford.
Xinyi Song is a sophomore international student from China. For Song, depending on the bus system during final exam time can be difficult.
“I needed to be on campus late during final exam week, but the buses stop running after 9 p.m.,” Song said.
Another problem for students was communication.
Since some students do not have American phone numbers, communication can be difficult when getting in contact with other students who are from America. Song also voiced her opinion about job opportunities and internships.
“I wish I could have more job opportunities,” Song said. “Every time I receive an email, its for American students.”
After the discussion, refreshments were served.
The university is continuing to work towards more programming for international and domestic students.
For some of the students, the transition has been easy; for some, it has not. These students all share one thing in common and that is accessing the American culture.
