Ole Miss Beta Alpha Psi Hosts Helpful Job Interview Event

Ole Miss Beta Alpha Psi invited KPMG Campus recruiting Executive Director Blane Ruschak to talk about job interview techniques at the Law School Weems Auditorium on Feb. 23, 2016.

Regardless of the increasingly high demand of accounting professionals in today’s business industry, the applicant pool remains huge and competitive. An outstanding resumé that demonstrates related experiences and leadership skills is one important step to land a job offer, but that is just the beginning. Most employers now conduct interviews with qualified applicants chosen from initial resumé screening. Interviews provide an opportunity for the employer to know more about the applicant besides their resumé and also for the applicant to know more about the company culture.

Blane Ruschak, former President of Beta Alpha Psi Accounting Honorary Organization and current Campus Recruiting Executive Director of KPMG US, was invited to share interview techniques to Ole Miss students who are applying for internships or full time jobs this year.

“Go on the company’s website, get to know their office locations, core values and culture. Take a look at what areas of service they provide and think about what kind of position you want to do,” Ruschak said. “When asked about your location preference, don’t say ‘I am cool with any locations’, it does not make you a flexible person, it will instead confuse the recruiter as he/she tries to hand your information to their offices.”

Ruschak also told students to not stress out if their GPA is not high.

“Put your GPA on your resumé regardless, and if it is not high, don’t get discouraged,” Ruschak said. “Make sure you show up as much as possible on the events hosted by the firm, network with people, and let the recruiter know your passion to their company—they might as well give you a shot!”

The event lasted for one hour, KPMG provided refreshments after the meeting. Many students stayed to network with KPMG employees and thank them for taking their time to attend the event.
