OPD Asks Help to Identify Card Skimmer Thief at FNB
The Oxford Police Department need help identifying a man who placed a card skimmer on an ATM at First National Bank on Jan. 9.
According to a public statement from FNB Oxford, the card skimmer, a device used to illegally collect data from the magnetic strip of a card, was place on one of the bank’s drive thru ATMs in Oxford. Twenty one cards were compromised by the skimmer.
“The device was on the ATM for less than a day and led to the compromise of 21 customer cards. All customers impacted by the compromise were contacted in January, and all of the compromised cards were blocked and reissued,” FNB’s public statement said. “There is no further risk to FNB customers from this incident.”
OPD shared some tips to the public on ways to protect yourself from ATM skimming through a link on their Facebook page.
1) Keep your eyes open: look for tape residue or the ATM itself looks loose.
2) Cover those keys: the thief will place a tiny camera on top of the ATM in order to get your pin number. Always cover your pin number up when typing.
3) Pay attention to your accounts.
4) OPT for credit: Whether you are at an ATM or a store, use the credit option on the keypad.
5) Don’t assume all ATMs are equal: Use an ATM inside of a bank instead of one outside the bank.
6) Trust your gut: If your card is declined, but you think it should not be declined, check into it.
7) Be on the lookout for potential thieves.
8) When in doubt, don’t: If you are not sure about using an ATM, do not use it.
If you have any information on this crime, OPD urges you to contact the Detective Division at 662-232-2400.
