Novelist Larry Brown Soon to Be Celebrated by Namesake Ale Saturday
This Saturday at 5 p.m., the Delta Steak Company and Yalobusha Brewing Company are launching a party in celebration of the Larry Brown Ale, a beer named after beloved novelist, Larry Brown.
Erin and Allen Sanders, owners of the Delta Steak Company located in Abbeville (just ten minutes’ drive from Oxford), are excited about this party. On their Facebook event page, they said, “Shane Brown, son of Larry Brown, will be playing live music, and reading a special unpublished story from his dad. Ann Crabtree of Southern Color, will be there with her artwork and giving away special ‘Larry’ pieces. We will also be making LB’s Chicken Stew!”
Erin Sanders went into more detail about the ‘LB Chicken Stew.’
“When Shane and I were discussing the release party, he mentioned how cool it would be to cook his Dad’s chicken stew.” Sanders said, “Of course, I was all for it and asked him to send me the recipe. The next thing I got were images from a chapter from one of the books that Larry Brown is in!”
“I mean, I should have known to expect that,” said Sanders, laughing. “There is no actual measurements or exact times… Just a process from breakfast to dinner and a lot of beer drinking in between.”
The book she got the recipe from is the Square Table Cookbook where Larry Brown shared his chicken stew recipe.
This party is celebrating the memorial ale that is made in honor of Larry Brown by Andy O’Bryan, owner of Yalobusha Brewing Company located in Water Valley. The drink is a rich American Brown Ale with notes of roasted malts, coffee and chocolate flavors.
O’Bryan said, “We are excited to have the party with my friends at Delta Steak and can’t wait to hear Shane play some music.”
O’Bryan also said he will donate a part of the profits from the Larry Brown Ale to local fire departments since Larry Brown was a firefighter before he gained fame as a writer.
Shane Brown, Larry Brown’s son and neighbor to Andy O’Bryan, said that in addition to singing and playing the guitar, he will read one of Larry Brown’s unpublished short story he discovered recently.
Brown said, “I’m excited about the launch party and celebrating another chapter in Dad’s life with family and friends. My family and I are truly honored by the naming of this beer in his name.”
He extended his gratitude to Erin and Allen Sanders of the Delta Steak Company and Andy O’Bryan of Yalobusha Brewing Company for honoring his father.
