Ole Miss and Baylor have verbally agreed to open the 2020 season in a non-conference game at NRG Stadium in Houston, according to ESPN’s Brett McMurphy.

Ole Miss athletics director Ross Bjork told SEC Country on Jan. 20 that the Rebels were in discussions with the Bears about a non-conference contest in 2020.

“We are speaking to Baylor about a game in 2020, but nothing is finalized,” Bjork said to SEC Country on Jan. 20. “Can only confirm that we are talking, and we are hopeful we can get an agreement done very soon.”

It appears at least a verbal agreement has been made between both schools for what should be an offense-heavy game.

The game would presumably be a part of the AdvoCare Texas Kickoff, which will host its fourth game in 2016 when Oklahoma and Houston open the season in Houston.

Mississippi State, LSU and Texas A&M are three SEC teams that have played in the game before, and the Tigers are scheduled to play BYU in 2017.

The game would mean Ole Miss would fill its SEC mandated non-conference game against a Power 5 school, while Baylor will get a much-need boost in its non-conference schedule.

The Rebels and Bears have only met one time, with Baylor earning the 20-10 win in 1975.

In regards to the SEC’s mandated non-conference game, Ole Miss will play Florida State in Orlando, Fla., to open the 2016 season, and the Rebels have a home-and-home series with California in 2017 (Berkley) and 2019 (Oxford).

Ole Miss also has scheduled a home-and-home series with Georgia Tech (2021-22) and Wake Forest (2023-24), although the Rebels still have a non-conference game in 2018 to fill.
