Ole Miss Ballroom Dance Club Dance Party Set for Saturday Night Regardless of Weather
This Saturday, January 30, the Ole Miss Ballroom Dance Club (OMBDC) is having a late-January dance party and everyone’s invited.
The dance/party is scheduled between 7 and 9:30 p.m. and will be held at the Ole Miss Band Hall directly across from the Ford Center on the Ole Miss campus.
The popular OMBDC dance party is a casual gathering that offers group dance lessons, snacks and dance mixers; all taking place with a variety of music playing in a constant loop for participants.
As of this writing, the dance is planned to go off as scheduled even considering the inclement weather headed our way. If that changes, you’ll know when we know.
There are, however, a couple of great changes to this particular dance party.
“It will be free admission to all this month,” according to OMBDC dance coordinator Lauryn Sperling. “We’re also having a 30-minute beginner and intermediate swing lesson on Saturday.”
As always at these events, all levels of dancers are welcome and urged to attend. Existing members are always happy to instruct and give assistance to those who may be a little intimidated with the surplus of dance steps.
Although non-members of OMBDC are welcome, club administrators stress that membership has its advantages; most notably, admission discounts to these and other club events. Yearly membership dues are set at $15 for students and $25 for non-students.
As stated above, admission for the dance party is free this month, however normal admission fees are set at $5 for student members; $9 for student non-members. General admission for the general public will be $8 for members and $12 for non-members. Obviously, this month’s free admission will be a big hit for all concerned.
And lastly… this may be good news or bad news; we’re simply not sure. Ole Miss has decided that no ladies high-heeled shoes will be allowed at the dance. This probably makes sense in that the university is trying to protect its flooring in the band hall; but how do the dancing women feel? We’re sure they’re probably fine with it as these parties have proven to be a tremendous amount of fun, but spinning on high heels and spinning on bare feet are two totally different strategies. But what do I know?
According to Sperling: “It really hasn’t been an issue so far (the high heels). We’re allowed to wear low, wide-heeled shoes, which are easier to dance in anyway.”
