Family, Friends of Moretons to Honor the Late Oxonian Couple by Walking to Funeral Service
Friends of Becky and Al Moreton, a well known and regarded Oxford couple who were killed in an accident in Simpson County, will honor the couple by walking from Oxford-University United Methodist Church to St. Peter’s Cemetery.
“That walk will be held on Monday morning,” Pastor Emeritus Warren Black said. “It’s sort of a symbolic walk of the walk they made every day from the church to Oxford Memorial.”
“As their former pastor it’s difficult to put into words how much they brought, not only to our church but to our whole community. They were what makes Oxford what it is,” Pastor Emeritus Warren Black said. “How they were constantly on the cutting edge of so much that is beautiful in our community; going back to Al’s standing up for desegregation at the university, and Becky being on the school board and helping with desegregation in our public schools; they were always out in front, powering the rest of to join in what is right and to join them.”
The Moretons were well-known to walk throughout the community. Becky is especially known for her service on Oxford Pathways commission as she worked to ensure pedestrian safety in Oxford.
Oxford University United Methodist senior pastor, Rev. Eddie Rester, said, “Because of their consistency, they knew Oxford and everyone knew them. They were an amazing part of the community. Through their daily walks, they met all kinds of all walks of life in Oxford- store owners, visitors, small children and adults. People of all ages knew them.”
Rev. Black and Rev. Rester will officiate the Moretons’ funeral services.
Becky and Al’s involvement with the Oxonian community has created a noticeable absence at their passing.
Mayor Pat Patterson said, “What a loss. Al and Becky Morton were treasures of the community. Their public service and involvement speaks for itself. Heaven must surely be a better place today.”
The Moretons were also great supporters of a “greener Oxford” and in their honor the family has asked that donations be made to CREATE for the Oxford Tree Fund to plant trees via the CREATE Foundation/Loft for the Oxford Re-Leaf Project. The contributions can be sent online at http://loftms.org/donate or to this address: P.O. Box 1053, Tupelo, MS 38802.
